Camel Bite Leads to Drug Bust and Child Endangerment Charges for '1000-lb Sisters' Star

Reality TV personality Amy Slaton Halterman, known for her appearances on TLC’s “1000-Lb. Sisters,” was arrested in Tennessee on Labor Day after a camel bite reportedly led to a drug bust inside the reality TV personality’s vehicle.

The Crockett County Sheriff’s Department says that deputies were called to the Tennessee Safari Park in Alamo, Tennessee, on Monday after a guest was bitten by one of the park’s camels.

Upon arriving at the guest’s vehicle, deputies “were immediately overtaken by suspicious odors” coming from the car, which sat Halterman, Brian Scott Lovvorn, and two children.

County officials did not identify who was bitten or disclose the extent of any injuries.

Both Halterman and Lovvorn face charges of Schedule I and Schedule VI substance possession and two counts of child endangerment. Both are being held at the Crockett County Jail. No bond or hearing information is available at this time.

The Incident at the Tennessee Safari Park

The incident began when authorities responded to a call regarding a guest allegedly bitten by a camel at the Tennessee Safari Park in Alamo, Tennessee. “Upon arrival, deputies were immediately overtaken by suspicious odors coming from the guest’s vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. The statement went on to say “Deputies were requested to respond to Safari Park where a guest allegedly was bitten by a camel.”

The sheriff’s office also stated that the officers were “immediately overtaken by suspicious odors coming from the guest’s vehicle.” As a result, officers searched the vehicle and found drugs. Both Halterman and Lovvorn were arrested on the same charges: illegal possession of Schedule I and Schedule VI drugs and two counts of child endangerment.

What Happened After the Arrest?

The pair were booked into the Crockett County Jail after Slaton was discharged from the hospital. Slaton shares two sons with her ex-husband, Michael Halterman – three-year-old Gage and two-year-old Glenn. It is not known at this time whether Gage and Glenn were the two children with her in the car at the Safari Park.

The Zoo's Response

As far as the camel bite goes, one of the owners of the Tennessee Safari Park — which has a drive-through and a standard walk-through zoo — contested Slaton’s allegation that she was bit by a camel at the venue.  Speaking with TMZ, Jon Conley insisted that the TLC star could not have been bitten by one of the park’s camels. Conley believes that Slaton’s injury was above the elbow and “not indicative of a camel bite, because the skin is fileted open and there’s no bruised tissue.”

Conley went on to say that of the thousands of guests the zoo draws each year, no one has ever been bitten by a camel before. He also said that the zoo hasn’t found any surveillance footage showing the alleged camel attack, and claimed Slaton was unable to identify where in the park she was supposedly bitten.

The Aftermath

Slaton’s ex had previously requested a restraining order against the TV star back in March 2023, when he filed for divorce. The divorce was finalized in September 2023.

This incident has sparked controversy and raised questions about the events that transpired at the Tennessee Safari Park on Labor Day. It remains unclear who was bitten by the camel or if Halterman's children were with her at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge as the case progresses.
