The A9 Inverness to Perth road has reopened after police investigators finished working at the scene of a three-car crash at Kingussie. The road was closed in both directions after the collision at around 2pm on Sunday. It has since reopened as of Monday.

The incident triggered a significant emergency response, with the fire service receiving the call at 2pm and sending three appliances from Aviemore, one volunteer unit from Carrbridge and one heavy rescue unit from Inverness. The fire service spokesperson said: “We received the call at 2pm and we are still at the scene. We sent three appliances from Aviemore, one volunteer unit from Carrbridge and one heavy rescue unit from Inverness.”

It is understood “a number” of people have been taken to hospital. The three vehicles that appear to have been involved in the crash, include a white Renault transit-type van, a blue Volvo SUV and a white Ford car.

Traffic Scotland, which monitors Scotland’s trunk roads, later reported that the road had been closed in both directions, saying at 4pm that emergency vehicles remained at the scene and advising people to avoid the area. There were reports of heavy build-ups of traffic.

The incident was finally reported to be over shortly after 9pm this evening when the road was reopened. A police spokesperson said: “The A9 northbound near the junction with the A86 at Kingussie following a three-vehicle crash which occurred around 2pm on Sunday, 8 September, 2024 is now open.”

Traffic Remains Heavy

While the A9 has reopened, traffic remains heavy on surrounding roads. Traffic Scotland advised motorists to avoid the area, as emergency services remained at the scene.

A9 Road Safety

The A9 is a major road in Scotland, connecting Inverness in the Highlands to Perth in the central lowlands. It is a popular route for tourists and locals alike, but it is also a notoriously dangerous road. The A9 has been the subject of much debate in recent years, with calls for it to be upgraded to a dual carriageway to improve safety. The latest incident highlights the importance of road safety, and the need for motorists to be vigilant and drive carefully on the A9.

What Next?

The incident is a reminder of the dangers of driving on the A9. While the road is now open, the incident highlights the need for drivers to be extra cautious, particularly in challenging weather conditions. Police investigations are continuing into the incident, and it is hoped that the reopening of the A9 will bring a return to normalcy in the area.
