Abu Dhabi has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable future by launching its innovative Green Bus service. These new buses, powered by clean hydrogen and electric energy, are part of the Green Bus Programme, which aims to make Abu Dhabi Island a green public transport zone by 2030.

A Green Public Transport Zone by 2030

The Green Bus Programme is a comprehensive plan to assess and manage public transport buses in the emirate. Its objective is to evaluate and select the most suitable technologies and solutions in hydrogen and electric power, providing these options to residents, visitors, and commuters in the capital. The programme is tailored to be more appropriate for the local environment.

The Green Bus service will initially operate on Route 65, connecting Marina Mall with Shams Boutik on Al Reem Island. The programme includes evaluating and selecting optimal hydrogen and electric bus technologies to suit local needs. It also features developing Emirati skills through training programmes in South Korea and China.

The Green Bus Programme is a collaborative effort between public and private sectors, with the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) partnering with international and local stakeholders to set new standards for green buses. The authority works closely with local and international stakeholders, including government bodies and industry leaders, to implement the Green Bus Programme.

Training for Drivers and Technicians

The Green Bus Programme is not only about introducing new technology but also about building local expertise. The programme includes training for drivers and technicians, as well as on-site support services. The assessment period for the Green Bus Programme, which began in November 2023, will run until June 2025. During this time, bus operators, including drivers, will participate in theoretical and practical training sessions led by the partners of Abu Dhabi Mobility for the Green Buses. Additionally, certified technicians will continue to receive training to ensure they are equipped to perform daily maintenance and inspections.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

The Green Bus Programme is expected to have a significant impact on reducing carbon emissions in Abu Dhabi. The programme will establish the standard specifications for green buses that meet the climate and operational requirements of the emirate. As Abu Dhabi's public bus fleet transitions from diesel fuel to renewable energy, it is anticipated that annual carbon dioxide emissions in the emirate will be reduced by more than 100,000 metric tonnes in the future. This reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will underscore Abu Dhabi's commitment to the Paris Agreement and its ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

A Pioneering Initiative for a Sustainable Future

The Green Bus Programme is a pioneering initiative that highlights Abu Dhabi's commitment to achieving a sustainable future. The programme will pave the way for a greener, cleaner, and more efficient public transport system in Abu Dhabi. It is a testament to the emirate's vision to create a sustainable future for its citizens and visitors. The Green Bus Programme represents a successful collaboration between the public and private sectors and highlights Abu Dhabi's commitment to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Green Bus Programme, a testament to Abu Dhabi's commitment to sustainable public transport, will contribute to the emirate's goal of becoming a global leader in sustainability and innovation.
