ELEVEN start-ups tackling major sustainability challenges have won funding in this year’s Amazon Sustainability Accelerator. The organisations have been awarded the opportunity to test their innovations within Amazon operations with a potential investment of up to £2 million. The start-ups will work with Amazon in the UK, Denmark, France, Germany and Spain to test new ways to recycle electronic waste, innovative packaging methods, groundbreaking building materials, and using AI to improve energy efficiency.

UK-based Cheesecake Energy will deploy its compressed air and thermal technology to provide ‘safe, reliable’ energy storage within Amazon’s European operations, reducing emissions from electricity usage. HT Materials Science from Dublin and American-based Phaidra also have pilots in development with Amazon in the UK.

To support Amazon’s packaging reduction efforts, start-ups Re-Zip and Hipli will launch pilots to ship close to 100,000 orders across France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria using reusable packaging. Circu Li-Ion from Luxembourg will help extend the life of Amazon’s batteries, using robots to disassemble and support batteries upcycling.

Throughout the pilots, Amazon’s subject matter experts will work closely with the start-ups, offering ‘feedback, troubleshooting assistance, and opportunities to refine their technologies’ to ensure they work smoothly in their respective placements. Upon completion, Amazon will assess the environmental impact, financial viability, and overall effectiveness of the pilots to determine whether any can be scaled across other sites as part of a long-term partnership.

“This trailblazing programme is a testament to Amazon’s commitment to supporting innovation and driving positive change,” said Amazon’s sustainability director, Justine Mahler. “By providing a real-world testing ground for unique and cutting-edge technologies, we’re not only reducing our environmental impact but also creating a blueprint for more sustainable practices across industry.”

A Focus on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Several start-ups are focusing on improving energy efficiency and harnessing renewable energy sources. For instance, HT Materials Science, a Dublin-based company, has developed a nanofluid additive that can significantly reduce heating and cooling energy requirements in Amazon's fulfillment centers. This innovative solution is expected to decrease energy consumption by up to 14% at facilities in Coventry, Daventry, and Doncaster, UK.

Another promising initiative involves Cheesecake Energy, a UK-based start-up founded at the University of Nottingham. Their technology utilizes compressed air and thermal energy storage systems to capture excess electricity generated by solar power during the day. This stored energy can then be used during peak hours or at night, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting the use of renewable energy sources. Cheesecake Energy's pilot project will be implemented in select Amazon fulfillment centers across Europe, contributing to the company's overall sustainability goals.

AI-Driven Optimization for Sustainability

Phaidra, a US-based start-up, is employing AI to optimize energy usage in buildings. Their AI-driven HVAC optimization solution aims to make buildings more energy-efficient and reduce carbon emissions. Phaidra's pilot project with Amazon will involve implementing their AI tool at one of Amazon's UK fulfillment centers, with the goal of lowering carbon emissions by up to 40% and reducing energy costs by up to 25%. This technology has the potential to revolutionize energy management in commercial, industrial, and data center facilities, leading to substantial environmental and economic benefits.

Tackling Packaging Waste and Battery Upcycling

Amazon is also working with start-ups to address the challenge of packaging waste and battery recycling. Re-Zip and Hipli, two innovative companies, are launching pilots to ship close to 100,000 orders using reusable packaging across France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Austria. This initiative will contribute significantly to reducing single-use packaging waste and promoting a more circular economy.

Circu Li-Ion, a Luxembourg-based company, is developing robotic solutions to disassemble and recycle lithium-ion batteries. Their technology will extend the life of Amazon's batteries, reducing waste and the need for new battery production. By promoting the reuse and recycling of these batteries, Circu Li-Ion aims to minimize environmental impact and reduce dependence on mining for new materials.

A Collaborative Approach to Sustainable Solutions

Amazon's Sustainability Accelerator program is a testament to the company's commitment to supporting innovative solutions that address pressing environmental challenges. Through this program, Amazon provides a platform for start-ups to test and refine their technologies in real-world settings. By working closely with these companies, Amazon gains valuable insights into emerging sustainable solutions, while start-ups receive valuable feedback, mentorship, and potential investment opportunities.

This collaborative approach fosters a spirit of innovation and partnership, accelerating the development and adoption of sustainable technologies. The success of this program is evident in the significant progress made by participating start-ups, with many achieving significant sales growth and securing substantial investments. The Amazon Sustainability Accelerator program is a model for other businesses looking to support innovation and drive positive change in the pursuit of a more sustainable future.

A Blueprint for Sustainable Practices

Amazon's initiative highlights the crucial role of collaboration and innovation in addressing sustainability challenges. By providing a platform for start-ups to test and refine their technologies, Amazon is not only reducing its own environmental impact but also creating a blueprint for sustainable practices across industry. The program serves as a powerful example of how corporations can leverage their resources and influence to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future.

The program has been praised for its commitment to fostering innovation and supporting entrepreneurs tackling environmental issues. By investing in these promising start-ups, Amazon is demonstrating its commitment to environmental responsibility and showcasing the potential of innovative technologies to drive positive change.
