Local councillor and Dáil hopeful Kevin 'Boxer' Moran has called for a feasibility study to be drawn up on a new road bridge across the Shannon, to the south of Athlone town. He said that traffic was "killing" Athlone at present, and that new road development, including a river crossing, could be part of the solution.

'Boxer' argues that Athlone has undergone significant transformation since the opening of the Athlone Relief Road, commonly known as the bypass, 33 years ago. The town's population has grown substantially, creating a need for improved infrastructure.

A New Bridge for a Growing Town

Moran proposes a new bridge south of Athlone, emphasizing the need to address traffic congestion and facilitate future growth. He highlights the potential of a new road, known as the Loughandunning road, connecting the Creggan area to Golden Island. This road could be a vital link for the new bridge and enhance traffic flow throughout the town.

He acknowledges that developing a third traffic crossing over the Shannon would be a long-term endeavor, but stresses the importance of initiating the planning process. Moran believes that securing a feasibility study, which can be funded through Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), is the first step towards achieving this goal.

Athlone's Growth Potential

Moran is confident that Athlone's designation as a "growth centre" in the Government's Project 2040 National Planning Framework will make it easier to secure funding for such a project. He points to the town's inclusion in the plan as a testament to its potential for growth.

"There was only two towns in the 2040 plan, and Athlone was one of them. I know because I put Athlone into it when I was Minister," he said.

He further emphasizes Athlone's future prospects by highlighting the completion of the Athlone Main Drainage Scheme, which will enhance the town's wastewater and water infrastructure, paving the way for further development.

Investments and Future Plans

'Boxer' highlights the town's growing economy, mentioning plans for a second Athlone business park on the Ballymahon Road, complementing the existing business park on the Dublin Road. He also believes the national Dublin-Galway greenway passing through Athlone will attract further investment.

The councillor's proposed bridge location is near the council recycling depot at Golden Island. He recognizes the challenges associated with the land quality on the west side but maintains that engineering solutions can overcome these obstacles.

A Vision for the Future

'Boxer' envisions Athlone's future with a focus on sustainable transportation options. He advocates for the creation of bus corridors and explores the possibility of an "indicative line" for a Luas, a light rail system, to cater to future growth.

He emphasizes the need to act decisively, stating that Athlone's infrastructure is at its limit. He calls for immediate action to initiate a feasibility study for the bridge project, viewing it as a crucial step towards securing funding and realizing the town's potential for growth.

'Boxer' concludes by asserting that the time is ripe for this project. "I definitely think now is the time to be looking at a bridge. Let's go to the TII and get the money for a feasibility study, and once that plan is in place, off we go," he said.

The potential for a new bridge in Athlone presents a significant opportunity for the town. It could alleviate traffic congestion, stimulate economic growth, and enhance the town's overall appeal. By taking proactive steps to address the challenges and harness the opportunities presented, Athlone has the potential to thrive in the years to come.
