The Audi A6 is going electric. The result has been christened the A6 e-tron. Both the saloon and the estate (now available as the e-tron Sportback and e-tron Avant) have completely dispensed with combustion engines and become battery-electric. There will be no petrol and diesel engines in future, but these A6s will become the A7.
A radical change for a model that has always been one of the best-selling in its class and is in direct competition with the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes E-Class. We get to know it better and take a look at its dimensions and boot capacity.
A6 e-tron Sportback: Dimensions and Boot Capacity
The dimensions are broadly comparable to those of the A6 saloon with combustion engines. The length of the A6 e-tron Sportback is 4.93 metres (-1 cm compared to the combustion A6), while the width is 1.92 m (+3 cm).
The height is the value that has changed the most compared to the previous A6. The electric Audi is 10 cm higher (1.56 m), which is also due to the floor plate on which the battery pack is installed.
The wheelbase is also very similar, measuring 2.94 m (+2 cm).
As the exterior dimensions suggest, the A6 e-tron Sportback is comfortable for both front and rear passengers. Rear passengers have plenty of legroom thanks to the generous wheelbase.
Although it is a saloon with a slim, almost coupé-like shape, the A6 e-tron Sportback has a good boot capacity. The minimum volume is 502 litres and can be increased to 1,422 litres by folding down the rear row in a 40:20:40 ratio. An Avant estate is also available as an option.
The option of folding down the centre seat is practical if you want to load long items such as poles or skis. There is also a 27-litre compartment in the boot, which is primarily intended for charging cables. This compartment can be opened with a sliding gesture.
Competitors
The A6 e-tron Sportback's fleet of competitors is rather small. There are currently only a few electric saloons in the upper mid-size class on the market.
The most direct competitors are certainly the BMW i5 and the Mercedes EQE, with the Bavarian being the largest car among the models under consideration. The Tesla Model S has the largest boot of all.
Audi A6 e-tron: A Deep Dive
Audi introduced the A6 e-tron in the summer of 2024 for the 2025 model year as a forerunner in the EV segment, offering the vehicle in two shapes: the Sportback and the Avant.
When Audi launched the A6 lineup in 1994 as a replacement for the former 100, the first generation was mostly a facelifted version of that mid-size sedan vehicle. The vehicle was built in two shapes: the sedan and the station wagon (the Avant, in Audi’s language). Fast forward to 2024, and the premium German car manufacturer decided to split its lineup using a different naming system. The new idea was that the vehicles sporting odd numbers used internal combustion engines. In contrast, those with even ones were EVs. Furthermore, the Sportback represented a hatchback or a liftback version of a vehicle. So, the 2025 Audi A6 e-tron Sportback was an electric vehicle with a hatchback shape.
At the front, the automaker introduced a redesigned version of its famous singleframe grille. Unlike the previous A6, the 2025 A6 e-tron sported a wider but shorter front panel, mimicking an air intake. Since the car wasn’t an EV, it didn’t need that much of a cooling area, so most of that element was blocked. The automaker flanked it with Matrix LED headlights featuring signature lighting for the daytime running lights. Below them, Audi installed a set of vertical side scoops that channeled air around the bodywork, forming an air curtain that lowered the drag resistance.
From its profile, the 2025 Audi A6 e-tron had a low-slung look, resembling the second generation of the Audi A7. The panoramic raked windshield was followed by a curved roofline and a sloped down rear end. Three side windows, one behind the rear doors and the D-posts, completed the look of the greenhouse. At the same time, the lower panels were slightly curved and had sculptured lines, while the automaker extended the side skirts downwards to lower ground effect. Finally, at the back, the mid-size hatchback had broad OLED taillights extended from side to side over the raked-forward tailgate.
Inside, the sporty-looking EV boasted a luxurious cabin fit for four adults. At the front, on the dashboard, the automaker installed a broad curved display consisting of two screens. The 11.9-inch one directly in front of the driver was for the car’s various functions, while the latter was a 14.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. In addition, a third, 10.9-inch touch-sensitive display was in front of the side passenger. Audi installed a set of bolstered front bucket seats that promised good side support to their occupants. Between them, it placed a center console housing a storage area with a sliding cover and an armrest with a cubby underneath. At the back, thanks to the almost completely flat floor, the 2025 Audi A6 e-tron Sportback provided enough legroom and headroom for adult-sized occupants. The split-folding bench seat (40/20/40) could fold flat and extend the trunk area.
Audi A6 e-tron: Performance and Powertrain
The 2025 Audi A6 e-tron Sportback relied on Audi’s PPE (Premium Platform Electric) 800-volt architecture shared with the Porsche Macan and the Audi Q6 e-tron. At the launch, the car was available with a 270 kW (381 hp) drivetrain that sent its torque in all four corners, while a rear-wheel drive version as a base model was announced.
