Australia's Wheat Exports Jump 19% in July: Indonesia & Yemen Lead the Charge
Australia's wheat exports saw a significant surge in July, increasing by 19% compared to the same period last year. The country shipped out 1.5 million tonnes of wheat in July, marking a substantial rise from the previous year's figures. This surge in exports contributed to a cumulative total of 17.6 million tonnes of wheat exported since the beginning of the 2023-24 marketing year in October 2023.
Key Drivers of the Wheat Export Surge
The surge in Australian wheat exports can be attributed to a confluence of factors. Notably, Indonesia emerged as the leading destination for Australian wheat in July, significantly boosting its imports by nearly threefold to 281,927 tonnes. Yemen also witnessed a substantial increase in its wheat imports from Australia, with its purchases rising almost fourfold to 219,340 tonnes.
Regional Import Trends
While Indonesia and Yemen drove the surge in Australian wheat exports, other key import markets exhibited mixed trends. The Philippines experienced a 22% decline in its wheat imports from Australia, reaching 209,034 tonnes in July. South Africa, on the other hand, saw a 5% increase in its purchases, importing 114,183 tonnes of Australian wheat. South Korea also registered a decline in its imports, with a 26% reduction to 111,573 tonnes.
China's Wheat Imports Dip Significantly
China, a traditionally major importer of Australian wheat, witnessed a notable decline in its imports in July. The country's wheat imports from Australia totaled only 4,248 tonnes, marking the lowest figure since February 2021. This decline can be attributed to China's active purchasing program in previous months, resulting in lower current demand.
Barley Exports Witness a Sharp Decline
Barley exports from Australia experienced a significant drop in July, declining by 57% to 311,187 tonnes. This decline was primarily driven by a 54% decrease in Chinese imports, which amounted to 287,137 tonnes. China's reduced imports accounted for a significant 92% share of Australia's total barley exports in July. This marked the lowest monthly barley export figure since October 2022.
Continued Decline in Canola Exports
Canola (rapeseed) exports from Australia continued their downward trend in July, decreasing by 13% month-on-month to 386,652 tonnes. This was also the lowest monthly export figure for canola since October 2023. The United Arab Emirates emerged as the leading export destination for canola in July, increasing its purchases by a staggering 260% to 152,384 tonnes. Japan followed closely with 151,871 tonnes, representing a 17% increase month-on-month. France also witnessed a notable increase in its canola imports from Australia, importing 59,075 tonnes in July, up from nil in June.
Future Outlook for Australian Grain Exports
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has projected Australian wheat exports for the 2023-24 marketing year to reach 22.465 million tonnes. The revised estimate for barley exports in the same period is 8.32 million tonnes, while the total canola export figure for the year is projected to be 6.18 million tonnes.
