Bayern Munich's Offensive Monster: Can Union Berlin Stop the Goal-Scoring Frenzy?

Bayern Munich will be looking to keep their unbeaten Bundesliga record alive on Saturday as they face an in-form Union Berlin at the Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany's men responded well to last week's Champions League thrashing at the hands of Barcelona, with Bayern easing past VfL Bochum 5-0 in the Bundesliga before dishing out a 4-0  hammering of FSV Mainz in the German Cup in midweek.

Another Bayern thrashing looks unlikely today, with Union Berlin boasting one of the tightest defenses in the league. Currently in fourth place after four wins, three draws and just one defeat in the Bundesliga, Bo Svensson's men will nevertheless be looking to bounce back after suffering a shock 2-0 German Cup defeat to Arminia Bielefeld on Wednesday.

Bayern Munich is building itself into an offensive monster this season, netting 29 goals in the first eight rounds, while Vincent Kompany, the former Belgian centre-back who managed the team, dominated the scene with an average of 3.62 goals per game-something that will give cold feet to any opponent before stepping onto the field against the Bavarians. And for good reason: relentless scoring and inspired performances put Bayern at the best average among Europe's top leagues, outpacing giants such as PSG, Atalanta, and Manchester City in total goals.

This weekend, the challenge remains the same as Bundesliga leader Bayern hosts fourth-place Union Berlin. Another goal-filled victory is expected. After all, Bayern's attack is razor-sharp and always seems on the cusp of another blowout, led by top scorer Harry Kane.

There is little doubt that the arrival of Vincent Kompany as head coach has introduced a new pace to Bayern. The now offensive-minded Kompany, with an intensity reminiscent of the club's golden years, isn't content with merely winning. The orders are pretty clear: press from the first to the last minute, always look for a goal, and if possible, get another right after. That goal hunger comes into perspective in the standings, where Bayern leads other powerful teams in goal averages.

Just this season, Bayern has run riot with 6-1 against Holstein Kiel, 5-0 over Werder Bremen, and another 5-0 over Bochum. Do the math, however scrappy, and the numbers are no lie. In Kompany's words, even he misses the count of the goals. "It was five goals, and it could have been more," laughed the coach, unaware already that his team has attained 29 goals in the league.

At the middle of all this goal storm is no other than the English forward Harry Kane, who was signed by Bayern Munich with the purpose of reinforcing the attack and, for the time being, became the Bundesliga leading scorer. Scoring nine goals in eight appearances, Kane is in perfect sync with Kompany's offensive strategy. His adaptation to the German league was so fast that even the most optimistic fans were surprised. During his first season, Kane is already leading in the scoring charts, proving that he came to break records.

The latest of these records is a remarkable one: in scoring his 45th goal in 45 Bundesliga games, Kane outshone none other than Erling Haaland, who required 47 games to make the same mark while at Borussia Dortmund. He has found, if anything, the ideal environment for his skills-putting his hard work and shots into the net with a rather relentless end product courtesy of a midfield that creates chances and finishes at every turn.

The Bayern game against Union Berlin represents, one more time, the chance to make their artillery mighty. Even though it placed fourth, Union knows that holding Bayern is no easy task. Even then, playing against league leaders adds extra impetus for any team, and the Bavarians have another great opportunity of sealing first place with style.

Nonetheless, Bayern remain at the summit, thanks to their goal difference, while RB Leipzig remain tied with them on points. That is not only because of their attack but also because of a good backline that balances the offensive intensity with safety at the back. To many, this game against Union Berlin marks another chapter in a season promising a lot for the club and its fans.

But if we start evaluating the stats of the goal, Bayern simply outmatches everything that has been seen so far in the other major European leagues. Take, for instance, Barcelona, with its 37 total goals; La Liga is already on the 11th round, three rounds more than Bundesliga. So Bayern leads what counts: average goals per game. No team in Europe's other top four leagues bettered Bayern's average of, which outlines a very good performance by the Bavarians.

So, in France, PSG indeed had 28 goals in nine rounds, while in Italy, Atalanta netted 26 goals in ten games. Even Manchester City, with its star-studded lineup and wide resources, managed to score only 20 goals in nine Premier League matches. Bayern is, therefore, the most efficient offense in Europe's top leagues, proof that Kompany is doing something right, and that Kane has adapted perfectly to life.

Against Mainz, Bayern scored some stunning goals. "Rebounds" could also become the trump card for the Munich team against Union Berlin.

München - Who's afraid of FC Bayern?

Several Munich stars presented their Halloween outfits on Thursday. Former sporting director and club legend Hasan Salihamidzic appeared as the Joker, the injured Aleksandar Pavlovic wore an orange prison jumpsuit complete with handcuffs, and Kingsley Coman was dressed as Frankenstein with his wife and child while trick-or-treating.

Trick or treat?! One thing is clear: The spooky Bayern want to celebrate a big party on Saturday. After two overwhelming victories recently in Bochum (5-0) and Mainz (4-0), the record champions aim to overshadow Union Berlin (kick-off at 15:30, Sky) and continue their unbeaten run at the top of the Bundesliga table.

"We have to be patient. Union defends extremely well. So far, they have only conceded five goals in the league. An incredible defense. It will be a tough task against Union. They didn’t earn those 14 points for nothing," said sporting director Max Eberl ahead of the home game against the fourth-placed team.

Coach Vincent Kompany is looking forward to the sold-out Allianz Arena. "Of the last 13 games, we had nine away games. It's a game in the Allianz Arena, finally another home game," the Belgian stated on Friday. "We know that they are good defensively and on the counter. They are very active in second balls and have a lot of personalities in the team; their communication and belief are strong. It’s a team that knows exactly what to do. We certainly don’t underestimate them. Hopefully, our strengths make the difference."

A key to success could be - as Jamal Musiala recently showed in the cup victory against Mainz - scoring goals. But how do you practice this? Kompany was asked. "There are two ways. On one hand, you repeat the movement patterns all the time," the Belgian explained. "We also have good role models here like Thomas Müller and Harry Kane. We need as many young players as possible who believe in the situations and recognize them." Kompany referred to so-called "rebounds" in football, which are blocked shots that are pushed over the line with a second attempt from close range.

In just 13 games under Kompany, Bayern have already scored 47 goals. However, the Iron Men from Berlin are a defensively strong opponent. "Union has the second-best defense in the league. Perhaps we need to take another step to score goals. We want to give it our all and hopefully win," Kompany made clear.

However, Bayern are plagued by injury worries in defense. New signings Hiroki Ito (midfoot fracture) and Josip Stanisic (ligament tear in the knee) are not yet ready to play. Eric Dier had to be substituted injured in Mainz, while regular center-back Dayot Upamecano (thigh contusion) missed out there. Nevertheless, the development for both is "good," says Kompany: "Still, we will take our time until tomorrow to make a decision."

At least defensive powerhouse Minjae Kim is fit.
