BBC Weatherman and Mystery Solver Craig Rich Passes Away at 86

The BBC has announced the passing of Craig Rich, its first regional weather forecaster, at the age of 86. Rich, a beloved figure in the southwest of England and beyond, died peacefully on December 1st, leaving behind a legacy that extended far beyond the daily weather reports. His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and viewers who remember his infectious humor and professionalism. Rich's life was a testament to a diverse and captivating career spanning the Merchant Navy, academia, and broadcasting.

A Life at Sea and in Academia

Born in Plymouth on February 3, 1938, Rich's early life was marked by an adventurous spirit. After leaving school at 16, he embarked on a twelve-year career in the Merchant Navy, captaining ships across the globe. This seafaring experience, combined with a passion for navigation and meteorology, shaped his future path. He transitioned from navigating the high seas to educating future navigators, becoming a lecturer at the Sir John Cass School of Navigation and later heading the Shipping and Transport department at Plymouth Polytechnic. His expertise in navigation would prove pivotal in unraveling one of the most intriguing mysteries of the 20th century.

The Crowhurst Case

In 1968, Rich's career took a surprising turn when he was appointed navigation advisor to The Sunday Times for the Round the World Yacht Race. This role thrust him into the heart of the mystery surrounding Donald Crowhurst, a British businessman and amateur sailor who vanished during the race. Crowhurst's disappearance fueled speculation and theories for years. His self-designed trimaran, the Teignmouth Electron, was found adrift and abandoned in July 1969. Rich, armed with his nautical expertise, was tasked with examining Crowhurst's logbooks. Rich discovered inconsistencies and evidence that Crowhurst had fabricated his progress, likely leading to his taking his own life in the face of failure. Rich's insights were instrumental in illuminating the tragic story, contributing to the bestselling book The Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst and various documentaries. The story was later adapted into the 2018 film The Mercy, starring Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz.

A Legacy at BBC Spotlight

In 1978, Rich joined BBC Spotlight in Plymouth. He quickly became a household name, serving as the first and longest-serving regional weather forecaster for an impressive 25 years. His tenure at BBC Spotlight spanned significant events, from the Fastnet Race tragedy of 1979 to the Penlee disaster in 1981. Beyond weather reports, Rich hosted his own show, That's Rich, showcasing his versatility and charm. He was also a regular contributor to BBC Radio Devon, showcasing his multifaceted career as a TV presenter and radio personality.

The End of an Era

When Rich retired from BBC Spotlight in 2003, he looked forward to spending his winters in Cape Town and his summers on his boat or the golf course. His retirement didn't mark an end to his impact. His colleagues consistently described him as a source of joy and laughter, even in high-pressure newsroom environments. He left a lasting impression on his colleagues and viewers alike.

Remembering a True Legend

Craig Rich's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, and a gap in the story of the BBC’s meteorology coverage. He will be remembered not only for his expertise in meteorology and navigation but also for his warmth, humor, and unwavering professionalism. His contributions to broadcasting and his crucial role in solving a historical mystery will ensure that his legacy endures. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat, and their three children, Jo, Sarah and Thomas. The family requests that instead of flowers, donations be made to the RNLI, to honor Craig's passion for maritime affairs. The family will celebrate Craig’s life privately, as per his wishes, and they appreciate the kindness shown through these difficult times.
