The definitive looter-shooter and latest entry in the genre-defining Borderlands franchise officially announced, Borderlands 4, is set to launch in 2025 on PlayStation®5 (PS5®), Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The announcement was made at gamescom’s Opening Night Live, and the game is available to wishlist now.
Gearbox Software, the developer behind the Borderlands franchise, has been teasing the next installment for a while now. In February, Gearbox founder and President Randy Pitchford told IGN that the studio was working on “the greatest thing” it has ever done. 2K later acquired Gearbox from Embracer Group for $460 million and confirmed that a new Borderlands game was in development.
The Borderlands 4 teaser trailer provides players with their first glimpse of an all-new planet. Players will once again assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they search for secret alien treasure while blasting everything in sight. The trailer doesn’t reveal much about the story, but it does show off the game’s impressive visuals.
The announcement of Borderlands 4 comes hot on the heels of the much-panned Borderlands movie, which flopped hard at the box office. However, Gearbox is eager to change the conversation to something more exciting, and it is exciting because this game isn’t that far away. Unlike some game studios, Gearbox isn’t making its fans wait forever for this release.
“The team and I at Gearbox have a lot we’ve wanted to do with Borderlands since we first introduced the looter shooter genre to the world with our original game,” Pitchford said in a statement. “All of us at Gearbox have massive ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are putting everything we have into making everything we love about Borderlands better than ever before while taking the game to new levels in exciting new directions.”
“We’re thrilled to be able to share with our fans that 2025 will mark a massive year for 2K and Gearbox Entertainment,” added 2K Core Games Senior Vice President and General Manager Catharina Lavers Mallet. “The Borderlands series is one of 2K’s most successful franchises ever and is beloved by millions globally. We’re excited that our already close partnership and collaboration with the Gearbox team has grown even deeper, and we look forward to delivering best-in-class experiences for both longtime fans and new players alike.”
While an exact release date hasn’t been revealed, Borderlands 4 is slated for a 2025 release, so fans won’t have to wait long. It’s been five years since Borderlands 3 came out, and that game didn’t inspire the kind of hype and widespread praise that Borderlands 2 received at launch.
The game is being developed by Gearbox and published by 2K Games. It is set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. You can visit the game’s website here.
