The renowned classical music festival, the BBC Proms, is making a significant move, taking up residency in a new city over the bank holiday weekend. This year, the Proms, best known for its concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, will be based at the Bristol Beacon from Saturday until Monday. It is a historic moment as it marks the first time a full-scale Proms has taken place in the west or south west of England.

Six concerts will be held at the newly-renovated Beacon, which recently underwent renovation works costing more than £130m. The Beacon has transformed into a vibrant hub for the arts, providing a world-class venue for the Proms. Simon Wales, the chief executive of Bristol Beacon, has been instrumental in bringing this event to the city. Having only started his role a few days ago, he has been working tirelessly to ensure the success of this landmark event.

"Everyone knows the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall, but we've been working with the BBC for a very long time to make sure Bristol would be one of the biggest residencies," said Wales, emphasizing the significance of this residency for the city. "We've got a really accessible and very varied programme, working with the Paraorchestra, the BBC singers, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra with conductor Kirill Karabits, and finally on Monday the CBeebies Proms. It's a really varied and inclusive programme that will hopefully be welcoming to our audiences," he added.

The Paraorchestra: A World-Renowned Ensemble Makes its Proms Debut

One of the highlights of the Bristol Proms residency is the debut of the Bristol-based Paraorchestra on Saturday. This remarkable group, known for its performances around the world, is comprised of both disabled and non-disabled musicians. The Paraorchestra's mission is to make orchestral music accessible to all, breaking down barriers and celebrating diversity.

Jonathan Harper, the chief executive of the Paraorchestra, expressed his excitement about the residency. "We're so grateful we have one of the best concert halls in the world to perform in, and acoustically it's the best concert hall in the country. For Paraorchestra, it's thrilling to be part of it."

A Musical Parade Launches the BBC Proms in Bristol

A lively ensemble, led by marching musicians from Bristol’s Jump Street Band, set the stage for the Proms with a special celebratory musical medley parade. The parade, which featured members of the Proms team, Bristol Beacon staff, and supporters, greeted commuters at the harborside, creating a vibrant atmosphere and showcasing the excitement surrounding the event. The parade was a testament to the city's embrace of the Proms, creating a sense of anticipation for the upcoming concerts.

A Diverse Program for All Tastes

The Bristol Proms residency boasts a diverse program, offering something for everyone. The lineup includes the Virtuous Circle performing on August 24th, BBC Singers at 100 on August 25th, and Evelyn Glennie playing Jennifer Higdon on the same day.
