The Denver Broncos have regained a pair of starters ahead of a prime-time battle. The Broncos activated outside linebacker Baron Browning and tackle Mike McGlinchey from injured reserve ahead of a “Thursday Night Football” matchup with the Saints, the team announced Thursday.
Denver also activated cornerback Damarri Mathis from injured reserve. The Broncos waived running back Blake Watson in a corresponding roster move. Denver had two additional open spots on its 53-man roster entering Thursday. Denver also elevated inside linebacker Kwon Alexander and guard Calvin Throckmorton from the practice squad to active roster for the game in New Orleans. The Broncos also signed defensive back Tanner McCalister back to the practice squad.
Browning and McGlinchey each suffered injuries in Week 2, and they are now eligible to play Thursday night against the Saints. Browning recorded five tackles and a tackle for loss in 58 snaps to begin this season. He posted 4.5 sacks in 10 games last season. McGlinchey started the first two games of the season at right tackle before suffering his injury late in the loss to the Steelers. Mathis has yet to play this season after suffering an injury in the preseason. He started six games last year and has appeared in 33 contests for Denver since being drafted in 2022.
Alexander is a nine-year veteran who has started 88 career games and recorded 631 tackles, 54 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, five fumble recoveries and nine interceptions. He signed with the Broncos' practice squad ahead of Week 4 but has yet to appear in a game for the Broncos. Throckmorton was elevated for Denver's Week 6 game, but he did not play in the contest. He has started 27 games and appeared in 46 contests over the last three years.
Watson, a rookie, appeared in the Broncos' game against the Raiders but did not carry the football. Denver also released inside linebacker Kristian Welch and waived defensive back Tanner McCalister. Denver released wide receiver Kaden Davis from the practice squad in a corresponding move.
The Broncos have made a pair of roster moves ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Jets. The Broncos have added a pair of veteran defenders to their practice squad.
The Denver Broncos cut loose a pair of defenders on Tuesday, releasing inside linebacker Kristian Welch and waiving safety Tanner McCalister from the 53-man roster, the team announced.
In corresponding moves, the Broncos designated right tackle Mike McGlinchey and outside linebacker Baron Browning to return off injured reserve. The Denver Broncos are set to take on the New Orleans Saints on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.
Before the game, the Broncos activated outside linebacker Baron Browning (foot), right tackle Mike McGlinchey (MCL) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) from injured reserve to the active roster.
Additionally, Denver elevated linebacker Kwon Alexander and offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton from the practice squad to the game-day roster and the team also waived running back Blake Watson.
The Broncos’ game against the Saints will be streamed exclusively on Amazon’s Prime Video. Playing on the road, Denver is considered a slight underdog in Week 7.
The Denver Broncos have activated both edge rusher Baron Browning and right tackle Mike McGlinchey off the injured reserve and onto the active roster for tonight’s game vs. the Saints. 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis is also reporting that cornerback Damarri Mathis is also being activated off the injured reserve for tonight’s game.
Browning and right tackle Mike McGlinchey were designated to return from injured reserve on Tuesday. It's uncertain as of this writing whether McGlinchey will also suit up at the Superdome.
The Denver Broncos announced a number of roster moves ahead of their Thursday Night game vs. the New Orleans Saints. They confirmed that they have activated edge rusher Baron Browning, right tackle Mike McGlinchey, and cornerback Damarri Mathis off the injured reserve to the active roster. To make room for those three roster spots, they released linebacker Kristian Welch, safety Tanner McCalister, and rookie running back Blake Watson. McCallister re-signed to the practice squad, Welch signed to the Ravens, and Watson will likely re-sign to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
The team also announced that they are elevating veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander and guard Calvin Throckmorton from their practice squad to the gameday roster for tonight’s game vs. the Saints.
Well, this is a bit of a surprise.
The Denver Broncos have waived running back Blake Watson, according to a report from the Denver Gazette's Chris Tomasson.
The Broncos activated three players -- outside linebacker Baron Browning (foot), right tackle Mike McGlinchey (MCL) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) -- from injured reserve to the active roster ahead of a Thursday Night Football showdown with the New Orleans Saints today.
Denver had room for two players on the active roster after cutting inside linebacker Kristian Welch and safety Tanner McCalister earlier this week. To open up a third spot, the Broncos opted to cut Watson.
The Broncos are getting a pair of starters back for tonight’s Thursday Night game vs. the Saints.
The Broncos opened up two roster spots earlier this week and then designated both McGlinchey and Browning to return to practice and now, they’re activated to the 53-man roster.
Despite Browning being out since getting hurt early in the week two game vs. the Steelers, the Broncos pass rush has been one of the best in the league. Now, Browning who is one of their better pass rushers, is returning and adding some more depth and explosiveness off the edge for Vance Joseph’s defense. Tonight, he’ll be going up against rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler who will be starting his second career NFL game while being down his top two receivers. So, Browning, and the rest of the Broncos' defense has a chance to dominate this one, even with Pat Surtain II sitting out this game.
As for McGlinchey, he adds some stability to a right tackle position that has seen three different starters this season due to injuries. Alex Palczewski was starting in place of the injured McGlinchey, but an ankle injury sidelined him for last Sunday’s game vs. the Chargers. Swing tackle Matt Peart got the start last week but with McGlinchey now back, he will go back to being the Broncos swing tackle.
We all know McGlinchey’s issues with pass rushers but he excels in the run game and should hopefully help a struggling Broncos run offense during tonight’s game. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ran all over this Saints defense last Sunday so ideally, the Broncos have the same success in this one.
Mathis will add some much-needed depth at corner, especially with Pat Surtain II out with a concussion. I would expect Levi Wallace to start ahead of Mathis, but he will provide some much-needed depth to the Broncos' secondary in this one.
Hopefully, the return of these two key starters and Mathis will pay dividends tonight and both help the Broncos bounce back from their loss last Sunday to the Chargers and improve to a 4-3 record.
Signed to the practice squad in Week 4, Kwon Alexander is set to make his regular-season debut for the Broncos.
Alexander will add depth to a linebacker group that lost Alex Singleton for the year due to an ACL injury and recently released special teamer Kristian Welch. The team did add Levelle Bailey to the 53-man roster, but the veteran Alexander could see some playing time. Cody Barton and emerging Justin Strnad have been starting but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him earn some playing time moving forward.
As for Throckmorton, with Alex Palczewski ruled out for the second straight week, Throckmorton will serve as the top interior offensive lineman for this game. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey is back so Palczewski will go back to a reserve role now when he is healthy. Until then, Throckmorton is your top interior offensive line backup for tonight’s game vs. the Saints.
As it is during the season, the Broncos roster is in flux with players either being out with injuries, coming back from injuries, or just your normal roster transactions. Hopefully, we see the three returning players along with these practice squad elevations help the Broncos get back to their winning ways during tonight’s Thursday Night matchup vs. the Saints.
Albeit on a potential snap count, Browning will boost an already potent Broncos pass-rush unit that ranks second in sacks (22) and third in quarterback pressures (93) through six games.
