A slow-moving thunderstorm dumped torrential rain on parts of Harwich Monday afternoon, with lightning sparking several house fires across the region. The squall, which caused relatively little rainfall in Orleans, Brewster and Chatham, caused street flooding in Harwich Center and Harwich Port. Nearly a foot of standing water was observed at the intersection of Sisson Road and Route 28, causing some vehicles to turn around to avoid being swamped. Frequent lightning sparked house fires in Yarmouth, Sandwich and in Harwich Port, where a house on Seaport Lane was damaged. Crews from several surrounding towns responded, and the blaze was snuffed in less than an hour's time. The weather is likely to have contributed to a vehicle crash on Route 6 near Route 137 that involved a box truck. Details were not immediately available, but the crash closed the highway for some time. While these incidents were underway, Harwich crews were also called to rescue kayakers who were said to be in distress on the Herring River. The kayakers were later located safely on shore. This story will be updated as necessary. A lightning strike during a thunderstorm sparked a fire on Monday afternoon in Sandwich, according to the fire department. Two fires were ignited by lightning strikes in Yarmouth as well including at a nursing home. No injuries were reported in any of the fires. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Cape Cod on Monday that was in effect until 7 p.m. Flooding was reported in Harwich and Bourne during the storm. A gas pumps fire suppression system malfunctioned at a Cumberland Farms convenience store in Orleans, requiring rescuers to evaluate two people. They did not require a trip to a hospital emergency room. At 12:55 p.m., Sandwich firefighters arrived at 17 Mill Road in East Sandwich to find the outside back corner of the house on fire. Additional units from Joint Base Cape Cod Fire Department and Mashpee Fire Department came to the scene, according to Sandwich Fire Chief John Burke. The people inside the house reported the fire and got out with the family dog with help from the neighbors. No injuries were reported, and the investigation will be completed by the Sandwich Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit, Burke said in a statement. Twenty-two firefighters responded to the fire. The fire damage was limited to the outside and some electrical components inside the house. Town building and electrical inspectors were working with the homeowner to reoccupy the house. A home at 19 Mill Road had minor electrical damage due to the lightning strike, according to the fire department. Cotuit, Bourne and Barnstable Fire Departments provided station coverage during the fire. In Yarmouth, the first fire occurred at 12:38 p.m. at Thirwood Place senior living facility at 237 North Main St. Eight minutes later, another occurred at a house at 18 Oliver St. No injuries were reported at either fire, said Yarmouth Fire Chief Enrique Arrascue. The lightning struck “the rear of the home on the roof line and caused small burning in the area of the attic, but did not extend any further into the home,” said Arrascue of the fire at Oliver Street. After the fires were extinguished, the senior living home remained occupied. Arrascue said he was not sure if residents would remain at the Oliver Street house, but said he believed they could stay if they wanted. Nearly two dozen firefighters responded to an East Sandwich home on Monday after a lightning strike reportedly sparked a fire in the attic. Sandwich Fire officials say just before 1 p.m., they responded to 17 Mill Road for a fire on the roof. The occupants in the home reported the flames and got out with the family dog with help from their neighbors, according to authorities. There were no reports of any injuries. Officials say the blaze was likely caused by a lightning strike as thunderstorms rolled through town. The damage was contained to the exterior and some electrical components in the home. A second house at 19 Mill Road also sustained minor electrical damage after the lightning strike. Sandwich Building and Electrical inspectors are working with the homeowners to reoccupy the residence at 17 Mill Road. A mutual aid request was called due to a staffing shortage with Sandwich EMS. A total of 22 firefighters responded to the scene from the Joint Base Cape Cod Fire Department and Mashpee Fire Department. Firefighters from Cotuit, Barnstable, and Bourne provided station coverage.
