“Improper scalp care is another major issue. Not shampooing your scalp properly or failing to rinse out products thoroughly can lead to buildup, which clogs hair follicles and hinders growth,” he explains. He explains that these ingredients can negatively impact scalp health and hair growth.

Fouche emphasizes the crucial role of a balanced diet in promoting hair growth. He explains that the body prioritizes essential functions before hair health, making proper nutrition vital for hair growth. He recommends blood tests to assess nutrient and mineral levels, particularly ferritin levels. “Ensure that your ferritin levels are above 70, as ferritin is essential for iron absorption,” he says. “While normal ferritin levels range from 50 to 150, a level above 70 is recommended for optimal hair health. If your ferritin is low, even high iron levels won’t be effectively utilized, which can lead to increased hair loss.”

Besides iron, Fouche highlights the significance of omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and adequate protein intake for hair health. “Adequate protein intake is also essential for maintaining healthy hair,” he says. “B vitamins, including biotin, are important, but be cautious with biotin supplementation as excessive amounts can sometimes have adverse effects. It’s best to have blood tests done to determine if you need biotin supplements.”
