Channel 5's Autumn Drama Lineup: From 'All Creatures Great and Small' to 'The Wives' - What You Need to Know

Channel 5 has announced a host of new dramas set to air before the end of the year, with an exciting slate featuring The Teacher, The Wives and Ellis. The Teacher forms part of an anthology collection following the successful psychological thriller of the same name which aired in 2022. The series stars the likes of Kara Tointon, Emmett J. Scanlan and Will Mellor. Meanwhile, The Wives is a six-part mystery drama following the unravelling of one family in a summer that changes all their lives.

Ellis is a three-part series following DCI Ellis, a tenacious cop who is parachuted into failing investigations. Upcoming Autumn shows also include the fifth season of All Creatures Great and Small and the third season of Dalgliesh.

An exciting new drama, The Hardacres, rounds off the Autumn slate and it stars Claire Cooper, Julie Graham and Liam McMahon. It is described as a rags-to-riches story that follows the lives, loves and fortunes of the working-class Hardacre family in 1890s Yorkshire.

Here's all you need to know about the upcoming shows.

Returning Favourites

All Creatures Great and Small has become a staple in the Channel 5 schedule and although an official release date has not been announced, it is slated to air in the coming weeks. Viewers will be thrilled to hear that Callum Woodhouse reprises his role as Tristan Farnon, Siegfried’s (Samuel West) mischievous brother who signed up to serve in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Viewers will also see how James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) and his wife Helen (Rachel Shenton) are coping as new parents.

Dalgliesh season three does not have an official release date at this time but it sees the return of Bertie Carvel as the title character. Season three is based on the book Cover Her Face, which was PD James's first ever Dalgliesh novel.

New Dramas to Look Out For

The Teacher

The Teacher, which is produced by Clapperboard, forms part of an Anthology collection following the successful psychological thriller The Teacher which aired in 2022, this new series stars Kara Tointon, Emmett J. Scanlan and Will Mellor. When a student’s death is revealed to be murder, Dani, a dedicated art teacher, quickly becomes entangled in a web of desire and deceit with her own marriage at the centre of it.

The Wives

The Wives, produced by Gaumont and starring Jo Joyner, Tamzin Outhwaite and Angela Griffin, is a six-part mystery drama that follows the unravelling of one family in a summer that changes all their lives.

The Hardacres

Channel 5 viewers love a Yorkshire-based drama and The Hardacres is expected to be another favourite in the schedule. The series is being filmed in Dublin and Wicklow, Ireland and is based on CL Skelton’s best-selling series of novels ‘The Hardacre Saga’. It stars Claire Cooper and Liam McMahon as loving married couple Mary and Sam Hardacre, Julie Graham as Mary’s mother and their three kids, Joe, Liza, and Harry, played by Adam Little, Shannon Lavelle and Zak Ford-Williams. Simon Cox, Executive Producer and EVP Content & Acquisitions, Banijay Rights, said: “We fell in love with the world of The Hardacres from the first read of the scripts and we’re delighted with the ensemble cast that Playground has assembled. We’re in no doubt international audiences will enjoy embarking on the journey with this talented family of actors.”

Ellis

Ellis, produced by Company Pictures and starring Sharon D Clarke and Andrew Gower, is a three-part series which follows DCI Ellis, a tenacious cop who is parachuted into failing investigations. As a black female cop, Ellis is used to being dismissed and overlooked, but she is a first-class murder detective, with a determination for justice and a deep well of compassion for those who need it.

What to Expect from the Upcoming Season

Head of Drama and Deputy Chief Content Officer, Sebastian Cardwell, said of the new schedule: “We’re riding high on drama at Channel 5 and have an upcoming Autumn schedule packed full of new series that our audience can get their teeth stuck into. With detective mysteries, gripping dramas, psychological thrillers and an incredible lineup of UK talent to bring the stories to life, there’ll be something for everyone to enjoy.”
