A woman was rescued in Cork today following reports of a person in difficulty on the cliff-face at a popular beach. The incident, which happened shortly after 6pm, saw one woman brought to safety after being “cut off” by the tide at Garrylucas Beach near Kinsale. The woman had gotten stuck halfway up the cliff, and a report was issued to the Valentia Coast Guard Station by members of the Kinsale Gardaí. Following the report, the Coast Guard Rescue 117 helicopter was deployed from Waterford, alongside the Old Head of Kinsale Coast Guard unit and the Courtmacsherry Lifeboat team.

Upon arrival, at approximately 6.30pm, a winchman was lowered from the helicopter and lifted the woman to the top of the cliff into the hands of the Coast Guard team. All units were then stood down at approximately 7.50pm. A spokesperson for the Valentia Coast Guard Station confirmed that once the casualty was brought atop the cliff, she did not require any further medical attention.

A Calm and Collected Rescue

“She was high and dry, and stayed where she was, she didn’t panic,” they said. “She didn’t need any further medical assistance - she was fine.” This incident highlights the importance of staying aware of changing tides and weather conditions, especially when exploring coastal areas. The Coast Guard reminds beachgoers to always check tide times and weather forecasts before venturing out, and to be aware of potential hazards.

Safety First: Tips for Safe Beach Adventures

The Coast Guard recommends these safety tips for enjoying beach adventures responsibly:

  • Check tide times and weather forecasts: Make sure you are aware of the tide times and weather conditions before venturing out. Tides can change rapidly, and unexpected weather can make coastal areas dangerous.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Be mindful of the terrain, water conditions, and potential hazards such as cliffs, rocks, and currents.
  • Don’t go alone: Always go with a friend or family member and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.
  • Carry a mobile phone: Have a charged mobile phone with you in case of emergencies.
  • Tell someone your plans: Inform someone of your plans, including where you are going, what time you expect to be back, and who to contact in case of emergency.
  • Stay away from cliffs: Cliffs are inherently dangerous, and it is important to stay away from the edge. Never climb on cliffs, and be aware of potential loose rocks or unstable ground.
  • Respect the environment: Avoid littering, protect wildlife, and leave no trace behind.

Coastal Safety is a Shared Responsibility

Remember, coastal safety is everyone’s responsibility. By being aware of the potential hazards and taking necessary precautions, we can all help ensure safe and enjoyable experiences at our beaches. In case of emergency, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

A Reminder to Stay Safe on the Coast

This incident serves as a timely reminder to always be mindful of our surroundings and take appropriate safety measures when venturing out on the coast. The Coast Guard plays a vital role in keeping our coastal communities safe, and we should all appreciate their dedication and expertise in responding to emergencies. By following safety guidelines and exercising caution, we can minimize risks and enjoy the beauty and wonder of the coast without incident.
