Costco is recalling another type of yogurt the company sells in Canada. The retailer says Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt, purchased from Sept. 3-19, may contain a type of yeast that could make those with a compromised immune system sick. The recall affects 24-packs of 100-gram servings purchased in Canada between September 3 and 19, with best-before dates of October 18, 20, and 22. While the food safety risk is considered low since the yeast doesn’t typically grow at refrigerated temperatures, Danone urges customers not to consume the product and return it to Costco for a full refund.

What is the Issue with the Yogurt?

Danone Canada, the manufacturer of the Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt, issued a statement saying the yogurt may contain a type of yeast that could cause illness to people with weakened immune systems. The statement emphasized that the food safety risk is low because the yeast is not known to grow in refrigerated temperatures. The company is recalling the product out of an abundance of caution.

Affected Products and Best Before Dates

The recalled product is Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt, sold in 24-packs of 100-gram servings. The recall affects products purchased between September 3 and 19, 2024, and with best-before dates of October 18, 20, and 22. The yogurt was sold in packs of 24.

What to Do if You Have the Recalled Yogurt

If you have purchased Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt with the affected best-before dates, do not consume it. Return the product to a Costco warehouse for a full refund. The company apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause and asks you to please pass this letter along to anyone to whom Kirkland Signature Probiotic Yogurt may have been given.

A Pattern of Yogurt Recalls

This is the second recall of a Costco yogurt product in a month. Earlier in September, 24-packs of Greek yogurt under the same Kirkland Signature brand were recalled due to mould contamination. This recent recall highlights the importance of checking product labels and following food safety guidelines, particularly for individuals with compromised immune systems.

Where Was the Yogurt Sold?

The CFIA, or Canadian Food Inspection Agency, says the latest recall involves yogurt sold in NL, as well as Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan.

Contact Information

For more information on the recall, customers can contact Danone Canada at [email protected] or call 1-888-846-8203 Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST, excluding holidays. You can also find their recall page here.

A Message to Consumers

While the risk of illness from this particular yeast is low, it is important to be aware of food safety risks. Consumers should always check product labels for recall information and dispose of any affected products immediately. This incident serves as a reminder to be mindful of food safety practices and to stay informed about product recalls.
