Costco's latest addition to its North American cafe menus has sparked a wave of customer complaints.
The revelation that the sandwich is also served cold did not help matters. One Reddit user, u/tsr85, questioned why the sandwiches weren't toasted and predicted the new item would be removed from the menu within four to six months.
Another user, u/PigBeak, criticized the decision-making in the food court and suggested they would prefer a price increase to maintain quality.
A plea for change came from u/KSMO, who urged Costco to stop using ciabatta bread in their sandwiches.
"Seriously, did they over-order millions of pounds of ciabatta bread by accident, and now they're trying to think of different ways to get rid of it?" joked Reddit user u/jedikimika.
"That bread cold is so bad," agreed u/Xrunner08, "but toasted is amazing. I miss the turkey pesto!"
"I wish they'd stop with the 'mustard/mayo' on every new sandwich," commented u/Slater_8868. "You can do better, Costco. I have faith in you!"
However, for some, no amount of tweaking could save the sandwich unless Costco significantly dropped its price. "I don't want a $7 sandwich. I want a $4 sandwich," grumbled u/outtapocket805.
One commenter, u/Livvy_NW, who claimed to work at a Costco food court, shared some insider info while assuring fans that the sandwich wouldn't be around for long. "What we've been told is that the higher-up folks are gonna be rotating a new sandwich every few months," she revealed.
She further explained that the sandwich was served cold because heating it up would be a logistical nightmare due to its construction.
While she wasn't against the idea of the new item, u/Livvy_NW expressed her dislike for one particular ingredient: "I just hate that it's bacon chutney instead of real bacon."
"It looks so weird," she added. "And I love me some bacon."
