Dillian Whyte has looked to force his way back into the heavyweight boxing scene by issuing a challenge to a shock contender.
The British boxer has only had one fight since 2022 after he missed out on an opportunity to face Anthony Joshua last August thanks to a failed drug test.
Whyte did go onto taste some action, defeating Christian Hammer in a third-round stoppage, but it was his only outing in the last eighteen months.
However, the 36-year-old is looking to return to the ring and has taken to Instagram to call for a third showdown against Derek Chisora.
Whyte posted: “Hey @derekwarchisora stop horsing around and let’s do the fight am not interested in talking am just interested in putting to bed again #FOREVERDONKEY”
Chisora has propelled himself back in contention among the heavyweights following his upset win over Joe Joyce in July, and has previously revealed plans for two more fights before he hangs up his gloves.
A lot had happened in the respective careers of both men since 2016, when rival British heavyweights Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora first went to war. And it was a war. Whyte edged Chisora in a modern-day British classic, the prestigious British title on the line. Both men felt they had won at the end, while fight fans really had to get their breath back, as the back-and-forth action was so thrilling.
The return fight, which took place a couple of years later, was no slouch, with Whyte this time knocking Chisora out in highlight reel fashion in round 11. Since then, Tyson Fury has beaten up both men, both men have passed their prime by some margin, and both Whyte and Chisora are today aging veterans who can, in the right fight, still put on a show. Maybe a third fight, which Whyte has just called Chisora out for, would be one such fight?
After suffering defeat to Whyte in their two previous encounters, a final all-British bout could see the pair battle one last time.
“Hey Derek Chisora stop horsing around and let’s do the fight, am not interested in talking am just interested in putting [you] to bed again,” Whyte wrote on social media.
Chisora, who revived his career yet again with his recent win over Joe Joyce, has said he wants to fight again this year. Maybe the trilogy fight, which Whyte currently leads at 2-0, could happen. Again, both men are past their best and have serious wear and tear and miles on the clock, but styles make fights. Just as Chisora-Joyce turned out to be a fun fight, if not one for the purists, so too could a Whyte-Chisora III.
Who has more left in the tank at this stage? Chisora is now 40, while Whyte is 36. Whyte has been inactive, suspended as he was after a positive drug test that was later cleared up as being caused by a contaminated suplement. Whyte returned to action in a low-key affair in March when he stopped journeyman Christian Hammer. Whyte wants Chisora again, even though he has already beaten him twice.
Again, this fight could happen, perhaps as a co-feature or an undercard fight on a big show. Chisora will always draw a crowd, so darn popular and admired as he is. Against Whyte, who is always happy to play the bad guy, Chisora’s army of fans would no doubt turn out again.
Who wins if Chisora, 35-13(23) and Whyte, 30-3(20) do it again?
Dillian Whyte wants to rumble with old heavyweight rival Derek Chisora for a third time. Usually, third installments are required to settle the score, but with Whyte having already beaten Chisora twice, it seems the Brixton ‘Body Snatcher’ has other reasons for re-engaging.
As Chisora has remained relevant to fight fans, providing crowd-pleasing efforts with the likes of Joseph Parker, Kubrat Pulev and Joe Joyce, Whyte has drifted away from the public eye and was last seen boxing in Castlebar, Ireland, where opponent Christian Hammer retired after three rounds.
Whyte’s last meaningful win came in November 2022, when he outpointed Jermaine Franklin over 12 rounds. A rematch with Anthony Joshua was in the works until Whyte returned a positive drug test. Dillian was later cleared to resume his career and is now calling out an old foe while rehashing the long-forgotten “donkey” jibe.
The first time Whyte and Chisora met, in 2016, Whyte won a narrow split decision following 12 rounds of intense warfare in the Manchester Arena. They went at it again in December 2018. It was a similar battle, minus the ending, where Whyte launched a thunderous left hook in round 11 to leave Chisora (who was ahead on two of the scorecards) in a heap on the canvas.
Despite that seemingly definitive ending, Whyte posted on Instagram: “Hey Derek Chisora stop horsing around and let’s do the fight am not interested in talking am just interested in putting [you] to bed again”. He ended the message with an interesting hashtag of #FOREVERDONKEY
In defence of a third meeting, Chisora would argue that he is in much better form currently and was so close to winning both of the first two fights. Derek also snared a third fight with Tyson Fury despite being soundly beaten in at least one of their first two encounters.
Estranged heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte is seeking a route back into world title contention after just one fight since 2022 and ‘The Body Snatcher’ now has a name on his mind that could catapult him towards bigger opportunities in the future.
Whyte has never quite been at the forefront of British boxing since turning professional in 2011, forever lurking in the shadows of both Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury but failing in knockout defeats against both when attempting to spring the upset. That loss to Fury remains as the only world title challenge of Whyte’s career to date but with the division set to be blown wide open in the coming months, the 36-year-old could find himself back in the frame if he can string a run of wins together.
In fact, the opportunity to return to the peak of the division was in the hands of Whyte just over twelve months ago, as he geared up for a rematch with ‘AJ’ last August. However, a positive drugs test ruled the Brixton-based brute out and he instead found himself fighting Christian Hammer in Castlebar in his next fight, rather than headlining the O2 Arena against Joshua.
Still, Whyte was successful in his comeback against Hammer, registering a third-round stoppage win as he tried to shake off the ring rust of an inactive 2023, although he is yet to return since.
On Instagram, Dillian Whyte revealed plans for a return and called for a trilogy contest against British heavyweight veteran Derek Chisora, despite defeating ‘Del Boy’ in both of their previous encounters.
“Hey @derekwarchisora stop horsing around and let’s do the fight am not interested in talking am just interested in putting to bed again #FOREVERDONKEY”
Amazingly, yet unfortunately for Whyte, Chisora is now a wanted man in the heavyweight division after his upset win over Joe Joyce in July. At 40-years-old, Chisora has now revealed plans for two more professional contests before he hangs up the gloves for good and suggestions of a showdown in Manchester this December do lend themselves for one last all-British battle for the fearless fan-favourite.
Whether the motivation to reignite his feud with Whyte and possibly avenge his two losses will prove to be enough of a temptation for Chisora remains to be seen but Whyte does tick the boxes for a domestic dust-up that doesn’t include a younger, hungry fighter, such as Johnny Fisher or Moses Itauma, and is sure to be considered as a ticket seller.
At present, Chisora is ranked in the top 15 with three of the four sanctioning bodies and consequently has an understandable target on his head from each and every British heavyweight on the periphery. Yet, Dean Whyte has advised his brother that he may need a few more tune up’s before taking on a fight of that magnitude and the aforementioned December date could prove to be too soon, possibly ruling Dillian Whyte out.
The pair first clashed in 2016 when Whyte had his hand raised following a brutal encounter with both fighters having their moments.
Two years later, Whyte emphatically put his mark on the series with a stunning knockout victory that would help him push on towards a world title shot.
“I don’t mind Whyte vs. Chisora as they’re both guys at the end of their career, said Hearn when speaking on The Stomping Ground.
“I don’t want to see Derek fight a young, fast heavyweight. It’s another fight like [Joe] Joyce/Chisora and that gave us a good fight.”
The heavyweight duo put on a classic fight for the British title at the Manchester Arena eight years ago, with Whyte winning a narrow and debated decision.
In 2018, they had a rematch, and on that occasion, Whyte knocked Chisora out cold in the 11th round of another highly competitive fight, which seemed to end the rivalry.
On Thursday, ‘The Body Snatcher’ shared highlights from their second meeting alongside a message telling Chisora to agree to face him next.
Whyte wrote on Instagram: “Hey Derek Chisora stop horsing around and let’s do the fight am not interested in talking am just interested in putting [you] to bed again #FOREVERDONKEY.”
Whyte’s post seemed to be in response to ‘Del Boy’ asking his fans: “Who shall I play a game of Last Man Standing with in December?”
A trilogy fight when one man is 2-0 up doesn’t usually make sense, but since their last meeting, Chisora has rebounded and found himself in a rich vein of form.
The 40-year-old has picked up wins over Gerald Washington, Kubrat Pulev and Joe Joyce in three of his last four fights.
Chisora was outgunned when he fought Tyson Fury for the WBC heavyweight title, but he showed his toughness to go 10 rounds before the fight was waved off.
Whyte’s career hasn’t been going so well as of late. The 36-year-old barely landed a punch when he got knocked out in his long overdue shot at Fury’s world title.
A contentious comeback decision win over Jermaine Franklin set up a massive fight with Anthony Joshua, but that fight fell apart when Whyte failed a pre-fight drug test.
Ultimately, Whyte was cleared to resume his boxing career after an investigation found the positive drug test to be a result of a contaminated supplement.
Whyte made his comeback in March when he travelled to Castlebar, Ireland to face German heavyweight Christian Hammer in a low-key fight on St Patrick’s Day.
Hammer retired at the end of round three and set Whyte up for big fights.
It appears Chisora is the man he hopes to face to get his career back on track, and luckily for him, it's a fight that also interests the Londoner.
“I will have a rematch with Dillian [Whyte] as long as he’s clean 100 per cent,” Chisora said after beating Joyce in July.
“There is no point in fighting someone who is not clean, but if he wants a rematch, I’ll give it him.”
