Australian Fashion Label Dion Lee Enters Liquidation After Failing to Find Buyer
Beloved Australian brand Dion Lee has entered liquidation after quietly going into voluntary administration in May this year. CUE withdrew its financial support, releasing its controlling stake in the business, forcing the brand to pursue backing.
According to official reports, a creditors’ meeting this week saw administrator Antony Resnick of dVT Group recommend that the 15-year-old company be shuttered after the business failed to acquire a suitable buyer during the three-month voluntary administration process. A statement from administrators explained that despite interest from potential buyers, no acceptable offer had come forward in time, leading them to recommend a wind-up order.
Dion Lee's Struggles: A Financial Picture
The news follows significant clearance sales over the last few months, which saw the brand log sales of $3.2 million, with 20,000 garments. However, with some pieces marked as low as 80 per cent off, the reductions contribute to a lower profit margin.
Documents tabled to ASIC showed that the business’ estimated total liabilities were just over $35 million. According to the administrator’s preliminary view, Dion Lee had relied on ongoing capital funding from related parties as the company was not trading profitably, including from 2022 with substantial capital injections in excess of $20 million from related parties that are both secured creditors of the collapsed brand.
