An urgent recall has been triggered for 50 food items sold across various retailers due to potential peanut contamination. The Food Standards Agency has sounded the alarm, cautioning those with peanut allergies to avoid consuming the recalled products. The list includes a garlic and herb dip from Aldi, Domino's dip pots, sandwich fillers and potato salad from Booker, as well as an array of sandwiches, wraps, and pasta salads available at Spar.
The Food Standards Agency issued a statement: "FGS Ingredients Ltd is recalling several products containing mustard powder because they may contain peanuts. This means these products are a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts."
The agency further advised: "These products are sold under several different brand names at several different retail stores. If you have bought any of the above products and have an allergy to peanuts, do not eat them.", reports Chronicle Live.
Domino's Dip Recall
A warning has also been issued by Domino's regarding its garlic and herb, and honey and mustard dip pots due to a supplier quality issue. The company stated: "Due to a supplier quality issue, we are recalling the above products as we have been advised they may contain traces of peanut which could pose a risk to those customers who have a peanut allergy. This affects the above products which were provided up to Sunday, 15th September 2024."
"Customers who have these dip pots at home should dispose of them. We apologise for the concern and inconvenience this issue may cause."
Domino's Customer Complaints
Earlier this week, Domino's told customers with allergies not to eat some of their most popular dips, which contained ingredients from a family-owned spice company in Leicester that prides itself on having the 'highest standard of quality'.
Customers had complained of having an 'itchy mouth' after eating food from Domino's, leading to the chain issuing a warning about its Garlic and Herb and Honey and Mustard dips. One customer wrote on X that they had an “itchy mouth” after one of the dips last week. They wrote: “I was wondering why I had an itchy mouth and felt sick after dipping my pizza in one of these last week, and other people’s allergies aren’t as mild as mine.”
Booker Recall
Booker also announced a recall, stating: "Booker is recalling the above Jack's Sandwich Fillers and Potato Salad bought between the dates identified below because there is a risk of a peanut allergen contamination, which presents a food safety risk to anyone who may suffer from a peanut allergy."
A Growing Problem: The Dangers of Undeclared Allergens
Allergens in fast food have come under the spotlight following several high-profile incidents. Schoolgirl Hannah Jacobs, 13, died hours after taking a sip of a Costa Coffee hot chocolate last year. An inquest into her death found staff at the coffee shop chain had failed to follow allergy safety procedures.

These notices will explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.
The Importance of Food Safety
This recall highlights the importance of food safety, especially for those with allergies. Undeclared allergens can be life-threatening, and it is essential that food manufacturers take steps to ensure that their products are safe for all consumers. Consumers should also be aware of the potential dangers of undeclared allergens and should check product labels carefully before purchasing and consuming food.
Moving Forward: Increased Scrutiny and Consumer Awareness
The recent recall of Domino's and SPAR products due to undeclared peanut contamination underscores the need for enhanced food safety measures and increased consumer awareness of allergens. Food manufacturers need to strengthen their quality control procedures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. Consumers, in turn, must remain vigilant, carefully checking product labels and being proactive in their food choices to ensure their safety.
