A Return to Form
Dream Theater, the legendary progressive metal band, is celebrating their 40th anniversary with a world tour that will see them perform in Europe, North America, and South America. The band's reunion with original drummer Mike Portnoy has been a major talking point among fans, and it is clear that the band is excited to be back together. Portnoy's return brings a sense of nostalgia and excitement to the band, as he was a key member of the band for over two decades. In a recent interview, Portnoy expressed his happiness at being back with the band and playing with his longtime bandmates again. He also said that he's excited to see how the band's music has evolved since he left in 2010.
Portnoy's return has been met with enthusiasm from both fans and the band. The band has stated that they are excited to continue the celebration of their 40th anniversary with their fans in North America and the rest of the world. The band's reunion tour will be a chance for fans to see the band perform their classic hits, as well as new material from their upcoming album.
The Band's Reunion
In April, Dream Theater met with Rolling Stone magazine to discuss their reunion and their journey back together. Portnoy shared that before the COVID-19 pandemic, he wasn't sure if a reunion would ever happen.
"Before the Covid pandemic, if you had asked me or any of these guys, ‘Was a reunion in the cards?’ I probably would’ve said, ‘I doubted that it could happen,'” Portnoy said. “I think if the lockdown hadn’t happened, you guys probably would’ve been on tour, and I would’ve been on tour with one of my 48 bands."
Portnoy credits the lockdown for the reunion. During the lockdown, various members of Dream Theater reached out to Portnoy and slowly began to thaw the rivalry that had been brewing between them. "We expect the first show to be an emotional experience — not only for the five of us but for everybody in the audience," he added. "I have a feeling there will be people coming in from all over the world to be present for the first show together. It’s scary because, under normal circumstances, it takes a bunch of shows to get your sea legs back. But in this case, we need to hit the ground running. That first show is going to be dissected with a magnifying glass in the age of YouTube. We can’t suck."
Looking Ahead
The band is also working on a new album, which will be their 16th studio album and their first with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. While they're not sharing much about the album at this point, Portnoy shared that it's picking up where their last album together left off.
"If I'm being honest, I think it picks up right where 'Black Clouds' left off, to be honest. There's a certain style that the five of us have when we write together. And if you listen to the album with this lineup from 1999, '[Metropolis Pt. 2:] Scenes From A Memory', through 2009's 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings', if you look at that string of five or six albums, that's the sound and style of these five people. So I think that's a good indication of what you can expect with the new DREAM THEATER album. It definitely sounds like classic DREAM THEATER."
Dream Theater is back, and they are here to stay. With a new album on the way, and a world tour that will take them to all corners of the globe, the band is poised to continue their legacy as one of the most important and influential progressive metal bands in the world. Fans are anxiously awaiting the release of the new album and the band's upcoming tour. The band's reunion is a major event for the progressive metal community and a sign that Dream Theater is ready to continue their reign as one of the most exciting and influential bands in the world.
