The EFL Cup third round saw a number of American players take part, showcasing their talents on English soil. While some thrived, others endured a night to forget.

American Success in London

Chris Richards stood out for Crystal Palace as they secured a 2-1 victory over QPR in a London derby at Loftus Road. Richards played a full 90 minutes in defense, showcasing his defensive prowess, and contributing to the Eagles' triumph.

The Eagles took the lead in the 16th minute through Eddie Nketiah, who bagged his first goal for Palace. However, QPR found an equalizer through Sam Field in the 54th minute. The match, however, was ultimately decided in the 74th minute by a strike from Eberechi Eze, who struck against his former club. Richards, deployed on the right side of a back three, had a solid outing, winning four duels, making two interceptions, and five recoveries.

Slonina Struggles at Old Trafford

Gabriel Slonina's night at Old Trafford was a stark contrast to Richards' performance. The young goalkeeper, starting for League One side Barnsley, was powerless to prevent a 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester United. The Red Devils were relentless, scoring a flurry of goals, with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen each bagging a brace.

Slonina, despite the overwhelming scoreline, displayed some resilience, making a few saves late in the match. He was, however, at fault for conceding the second goal of the match when he bundled over Antony, who then converted the ensuing penalty.

Holmes Leads Preston to Upset

Duane Holmes played a pivotal role in Preston North End's stunning upset victory over Premier League side Fulham. Holmes started the match and played 82 minutes as the Lilywhites eliminated the Cottagers after a tense penalty shootout.

The two teams were locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Ryan Ledson's opener for Preston countered by Reiss Nelson's equalizer in the second half. Both teams were perfect through eight rounds of penalties before Jorge Cuenca missed for Fulham. However, Kaine Kesler-Hayden also missed for Preston in the ensuing round. Timothy Castagne then skied his penalty kick effort, allowing Ledson to step up and convert the winning penalty.

Other Notable Performances

Lynden Gooch was absent from Stoke City's 2-1 penalty shootout victory over Fleetwood Town, having been sidelined due to injury. The teams were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes.

The EFL Cup: A Platform for American Talent

The EFL Cup offers a valuable platform for American players to showcase their abilities and gain valuable experience playing in a competitive environment. The performances of Richards, Slonina, and Holmes are a testament to the growing talent pool of American players in England.

These matches also provided insights into the strengths and weaknesses of these young players. For Richards, it was a night of solid defensive performances, while Slonina's night underlined the importance of having a strong defensive structure around him. Holmes' performance in the upset win over Fulham showcased his ability to shine under pressure.

As the EFL Cup continues, it will be fascinating to see how these American players fare and what further opportunities for advancement will arise.
