Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez has told Wolves which Arsenal player he thinks Gary O’Neil should sign this summer. For Gary O’Neil and Wolves, a promising transfer window has unravelled into a bit of a nightmare as the Wanderers chase further additions before Friday’s deadline. O’Neil made three additions to his squad early doors but he still needs to find replacements for captain Max Kilman and winger Pedro Neto. Carlos Forbs is the ‘priority’ to succeed Neto but Ipswich Town have seemingly moved ahead of Wolves in the race to sign Burnley’s Dara O’Shea, who would have replaced Kilman. Signing a new defender and attacker remains the most important deals the Old Gold can complete before Deadline Day however, a goalkeeper also appears to be on the agenda. Wolves have sent an enquiry for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who lost his number one jersey to David Raya last season and is poised to leave the Emirates this summer. The Wanderers have reportedly offered to take the England international on loan with a buy option of £25 million next year. Wolves fans are understandably cautious about signing Ramsdale, who is a West Brom supporter however, former goalkeeper Emi Martinez believes a switch to Molineux would be ‘a good move’ for the 26-year-old. As per the Mirror, Martinez said: “I think he’s in a different position to me… he signed for £32m, he was the No. 1 for Arsenal – I never had a chance like that. “When you play every game in the Premier League and then you drop to the bench with the quality that Aaron has… I think he should find a place to play where he feels loved. I heard he might go to Wolves, which I think could be a good move for him.” Martinez was someone who found himself in a similar position to Ramsdale at the Emirates, as the Argentine was mostly used as a second choice. The 31-year-old then decided to join Aston Villa in 2020 and the rest, as they say, is history. Martinez has since become arguably the best goalkeeper on the planet and last term, helped Villa qualify for the Champions League. With Arsenal looking to recoup most of the £30 million they paid Sheffield United for Ramsdale in 2021, it’s unlikely the Wanderers would shell out that kind of money to sign the Englishman. Although Ramsdale wants to work with O’Neil, it doesn’t make sense at this moment to capture him as other creases need ironing out first. In the final six days of the window, a centre-back and winger are needed at the very least to replace Kilman and Neto, with a goalkeeper transfer able to wait on the back burner. O’Neil is currently satisfied with his number one Jose Sa and given Ramsdale wants to leave Arsenal to play regular football, that isn’t guaranteed at Molineux. Whilst a move for the Gunners shot-stopper isn’t out of the question, it’s unlikely to happen this late in the window. Southampton are actively seeking to bolster their goalkeeping ranks after a tough start to the Premier League season. Following the loss to Newcastle, it’s clear that manager Russell Martin is looking for reinforcements. While Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow was initially targeted, the club is now considering Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale as a viable alternative. Ramsdale, who lost his starting spot to David Raya at Arsenal, is keen on finding a club where he can secure regular playing time. With Wolves also expressing interest, it’s shaping up to be a competitive race for the 26-year-old keeper. Ramsdale’s situation at Arsenal is becoming increasingly precarious. Once the undisputed No. 1, he’s now on the fringes after David Raya’s arrival. As noted in the original article by the Mail, Ramsdale “is eager to play regularly again.” This desire could make Southampton an appealing destination, especially with the current uncertainty surrounding their goalkeeper options. Southampton’s predicament is clear. Alex McCarthy, who started in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle, is 34 and past his prime. With Gavin Bazunu out injured, Southampton are left with limited options. Joe Lumley, while a decent backup, isn’t seen as a long-term solution. Strengthening the squad with a young and experienced keeper like Ramsdale would be a strategic move for the Saints. Wolves’ interest in Ramsdale complicates matters. They’ve already submitted a loan offer with an option to buy, which could force Southampton to act swiftly if they want to secure the Arsenal keeper’s services. The potential acquisition of Aaron Ramsdale would be a game-changer for the Saints. Ramsdale, despite his current situation at Arsenal, has consistently demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level. His agility, shot-stopping prowess, and vocal presence make him an ideal candidate to shore up our defence. Justin Bijlow is undoubtedly a talented goalkeeper with international experience, but Ramsdale’s Premier League know-how gives him the edge. He’s been through the trials of top-flight football in England, and his hunger to reclaim a starting position could align perfectly with Southampton’s ambitions this season.
