A Fatal Crash on Highway 1 Near Chilliwack

A fatal multi-vehicle crash in Chilliwack, B.C., on Tuesday afternoon closed Highway 1 eastbound for around 12 hours.

B.C. Highway Patrol and Chilliwack RCMP said in a statement that they responded to the crash near Yale Road West just after 2:45 p.m. PT.

Police confirmed fatalities and multiple injuries due to the crash.

"From what we've heard it's five or six [vehicles involved]," Cpl. Melissa Jongema with B.C. Highway Patrol told CBC News. "We had a lot of ambulances on the scene and we're requested helicopters, so there are people being transported to multiple hospitals."

"We just need to wait until investigators are able to touch base with all of those who are injured, and the families of those who have lost a loved one today, [before] we get that final number," Jongema added, in response to a question about how many people were killed and injured in the crash.

The highway was closed eastbound at No. 3 Road with just a single lane of westbound traffic open initially.

The highway fully reopened just before 3 a.m. PT Wednesday, according to DriveBC.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) has been called to assist, B.C. Highway Patrol said Tuesday afternoon.

Police Investigating Fatalities and Injuries

The crash was in the eastbound lanes at the end of the Vedder Canal Bridge, west of the Yale Road West exit around 2:40 p.m. on Aug. 6.

Emergency personnel reported that five vehicles were involved and at least one person was trapped.

Eastbound traffic was completely blocked and westbound was down to one lane.

BC Highway Patrol issued a statement just before 4 p.m., asking people to avoid the area if possible.

"BC Highway Patrol is currently on scene for a major motor vehicle incident on Highway 1 near Yale Road West," the statement read. "Highway 1 is currently closed eastbound to allow first responders space to work safety and help those affected."

At that time, one westbound lane was being kept open, with closures remaining in place until further notice.

"Expect significant delays in both directions driving through Chilliwack," the statement said.

The BC Highway Patrol has also confirmed there have been multiple fatalities in this crash, and multiple people injured. The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) has been called out and will be attending to assist the investigation. Officials are currently in the early stages of their investigation and will provide an update when possible.

Road Closure, Traffic Delays and Investigations

The crash occurred near the intersection of Highway 1 and Yale Road West in Chilliwack, a major transportation route in the Fraser Valley. It caused significant disruption to traffic flow, resulting in extensive delays for commuters and travellers.

In response to the incident, the B.C. Highway Patrol closed both eastbound lanes of Highway 1, as well as one westbound lane. The road remained closed for several hours, causing considerable traffic congestion.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) was dispatched to the scene to assist in the investigation. The team's expertise in complex collisions will help determine the cause of the crash and any contributing factors.

ICARS is responsible for reconstructing collisions to identify the sequence of events leading up to the crash. This involves collecting evidence, analyzing data, and producing a detailed report. Their findings will help authorities to determine if any criminal charges are warranted.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release details about the causes of the crash or the identities of those involved.

A Tragic Reminder of Highway Safety

This fatal crash serves as a stark reminder of the importance of highway safety. Every day, drivers face risks on the roads, and even a small lapse in concentration can have devastating consequences.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, avoid distractions, and adhere to traffic regulations at all times. By practicing safe driving habits, we can help to reduce the number of collisions and protect ourselves and others on the roads.

The authorities will continue to investigate this incident, and more information is expected to be released in the coming days. It's important to stay informed about updates and traffic conditions, as this situation will likely affect road travel in the Chilliwack area for some time.

This tragedy underscores the importance of responsible driving and the need for vigilance on the roads. As the investigation continues, our thoughts are with the families and friends affected by this devastating event.
