Four Critical After Head-On Collision on Highway 15 in Ste-Adèle

Quebec provincial police are investigating a serious head-on collision on Highway 15 in the Ste-Adèle sector in the Laurentians, leaving four people in critical condition. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon around 2:20 p.m., near exit 64.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), a vehicle travelling southbound on Highway 15 veered off course and crossed the median, colliding with a northbound vehicle. There were two people in each vehicle, all of whom were transported to hospital in critical condition.

Investigation Underway

SQ spokesperson Camille Savoie confirmed Friday evening that an 84-year-old woman, a passenger in one of the vehicles, succumbed to her injuries in hospital. The driver of her car, also in his 80s, is now out of danger. However, police are still concerned about the life of the driver of the other vehicle, a woman in her 40s. The passenger in that vehicle is no longer in critical condition.

Accident reconstructionists were dispatched to the scene to determine the causes and circumstances of the collision. Highway 15 near exit 64 was closed for several hours but reopened to motorists shortly after 7 p.m. This incident highlights the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of road safety. Drivers are reminded to stay alert, obey traffic laws, and avoid any distractions that could compromise their focus on the road.

Laurentians Traffic Safety

The Laurentians region is a popular destination for outdoor recreation and tourism. The region's winding roads and mountainous terrain can present unique challenges for drivers, making it essential for motorists to exercise caution and follow all safety guidelines. Highway 15, a major artery connecting Montreal to the north, experiences heavy traffic, especially during peak seasons and weekends. The SQ encourages drivers to be aware of their surroundings and drive defensively to prevent accidents.

Importance of Road Safety

Road safety is a collective responsibility, and it's crucial for individuals to prioritize their safety and the safety of others on the roads. Drivers can contribute to safer roads by adopting responsible driving habits, avoiding distractions, adhering to speed limits, and being aware of their surroundings. These actions can make a significant difference in preventing accidents and protecting lives. In addition to individual efforts, effective road infrastructure and traffic management systems play a vital role in enhancing road safety. By promoting a culture of road safety, we can collectively work towards reducing accidents and creating a safer environment for all road users.

Moving Forward

The investigation into the Ste-Adèle collision is ongoing. The SQ will continue to gather evidence and determine the factors that led to the accident. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible driving and the potential consequences of negligence on the roads. The hope is that by learning from these incidents, we can prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
