The second season of the Frasier revival has only just begun but Kelsey Grammer is already eyeing up more surprises for viewers – including the return of some very controversial characters.
We were first introduced to the stuffy psychiatrist in Cheers, before he landed his very own spin-off alongside David Hyde Pierce, John Mahoney, Jane Leeves and Peri Gilpin.
Although Kelsey was joined by a string of new faces for the Paramount+ revival, which premiered last year, Bebe Neuwirth and Peri reprised their roles, with Harriet Sansom Harris, Edward Hibbert and Dan Butler also returning in upcoming episodes.
However, speaking to Metro.co.uk to promote the current series, the 69-year-old touched on who else he would like to return to the fold.
‘We just have Roz right now, we have my agent, Bebe Glazer, played by Harriet Harris, making an appearance. We’ve got Bulldog and Gil Chesterton, they’re going to be on in November. I think everybody knows that already,’ he told us.
‘I’m cooking up a couple of surprises that I think the writers will embrace. We’d like to get the Moon family back!
‘Daphne Moon’s dad, Brian Cox, I’d love to have him show up and teach his grandson how to drink. Something like that? That’s sort of a loose area.’
Daphne’s illustrious family was made up of some wild characters, including Millicent Martin as her mom, Gertrude Moon, and Anthony LaPaglia as her brother, Simon.
Brian made a very brief appearance as her drunken dad, while Robbie Coltrane and Richard E Grant starred as her brothers in the finale.
Viewers weren’t taken with the Moon family – and their unique takes on a Manchester accent – and have continued to slam the characters on Reddit, branding them ‘frustrating’, ‘out of place’, ‘one dimensional’ and ‘unbearable’.
That isn’t the only member of the Frasier gang that could pop back up, as Kelsey revealed that he already has a plot in mind for the return of Kirby Gardner – who played the son of Jean Smart’s Lana Gardner.
Lifting the lid on exactly how Brian Klugman could stage a comeback, the Simpsons legend shared that they had remained close friends since sharing the screen together years ago.
‘There’s a great character, Jean Smart’s kid Kirby – the red-haired, curly-haired kid,’ he continued. ‘He and I have stayed great, great friends, actually. I was talking to him just the other day, and I said, “I’m trying to cook up a way to get you on the show”.
‘People really remember him. It would be really fun to see him make an appearance, and to see that he’s really succeeded somehow. Something’s really taken off, and it’s all connected to his past and his old girlfriend and a wine cellar.
‘It’s a classic Frasier set up. I think that might get some legs, and we might do a show about it. There’s a lot of stuff that could happen.’
Ever since the first season of the revival was announced, fans have also been calling out for Sir David Jason to get involved in some way, reuniting Nicholas Lyndhurst with his former castmate and bringing a touch of the Only Fools and Horses magic to Boston.
When asked about whether we could see the comedy legend make a mini cameo at some point soon, Kelsey didn’t quite rule out the possibility – which means we need to make this happen, immediately.
‘It makes sense. Who knows? I mean, he could just walk by and say “Dipstick”, couldn’t he?,’ he laughed. ‘It might be really fun to have Alan maybe watching it, watching the old show or something?
‘There’s any number of ways to maybe make that connection, because, of course it is a nostalgic show and Nick has such a huge, huge presence in the UK – with good reason!
‘He’s one of the best actors who ever lived. There’s no question about his abilities and and he’s beloved, so we’ll mine that as much as we possibly can.
‘He’s remarkable. I and the writers were talking about, “Boy, I can’t wait until maybe next season where Frasier doesn’t even have to do anything at all, we’ll just let Nick have the show”.
‘We’re really looking forward to what that one might be. We’ve set it up well enough to have him take the reins of the A story in a show pretty soon. We’re working up to that now.’
Frasier is available to stream on Paramount+ now, with new episodes dropping on Thursdays.
