Fresno State football is bringing back a popular look this fall.

The Bulldogs unveiled their newly redesigned all-black uniforms Tuesday, marking the first time since 2015 that FS is returning with the look.

Fresno State first wore the look during the 2013 season before its Nov. 2 contest against Nevada. That was during the era of Derek Carr and Davante Adams. The look also came during a period when the Bulldogs were outfitted by Nike.

Now, Adidas has helped provide the new all-black touch. Fresno State is bringing back the black home jersey and pants. The Bulldogs will also have a black helmet with the "Bulldogs" lettering emblazoned in red. The uniforms feature "FRESNO STATE" in all red across the chest, plus red numbers with white outlines.

A Look Back at the 2015 Uniforms

The team's previous black uniform, worn in 2015, was also a bold statement. While the general design was similar, featuring black helmets, jerseys, and pants, the 2015 version differed in subtle details. The numbers, for instance, were white instead of red, and the helmet design, including the logo placement, differed slightly. This year's design reflects a more modern take on the all-black aesthetic, incorporating elements that echo the team's traditional colors and branding.

The Return of the Blackout

The Bulldogs will debut their newly touched up black jerseys on Oct. 26 against San Jose State for Homecoming, which is also themed "Fright Night" due to the contest being scheduled during Halloween weekend. Fans are asked to participate in a blackout by wearing black in the stands as well. This will be a spectacle to watch, as the entire stadium will be engulfed in a sea of black, creating an intimidating atmosphere for the opposing team.

The Coach's Take

Tim Skipper, Fresno State's interim head coach, was excited about the new look. "Coming soon to Valley Children's Stadium! That #51 looks good in black," Skipper posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), referencing his former collegiate number at FS as one of the all-black jerseys on display.

The uniforms have clearly generated a lot of excitement. It's a fun throwback, and it's an opportunity for fans and players to create some excitement on Halloween weekend. It's a bold move that's sure to turn heads and make a statement. It's a reminder that in the world of college football, uniforms can be a powerful way to build team spirit and create a memorable experience for fans.

What's Next for the Bulldogs?

The Bulldogs will be looking to continue their winning ways in the Mountain West Conference. They have a tough schedule ahead of them, but with a new look and a renewed sense of energy, they are ready to make a run for the playoffs. The team's performance in the black uniforms will be a highlight of the season, and it will be interesting to see how the players perform with this new, iconic look. It's a fresh start, a bold statement, and a chance to make a lasting impression on the college football landscape.

The Black Uniforms: A Look at the Details

The new black uniform features a number of details that set it apart from the previous version. These include:

  • Black helmets with a matte finish: The "Bulldogs" lettering is rendered in red metallic script, outlined in white. The front bumper reads "'Dogs" and the helmets have a black cage.

  • Black jerseys with red "FRESNO STATE" wordmark: The front numbers are red, outlined in white, and TV numbers in the same style are located on the sleeve caps. The Mountain West Conference Patch, maker's mark, and the green/red "V" logo are also across the front of the jersey.

  • Black pants with stripeless design: The Bulldog logo is on the right hip and the maker's mark is on the left hip. The green "V" symbolizes California's Central Valley, specifically the San Joaquin Valley.

What's the Buzz on Social Media?

Reactions to the new uniforms have been mixed on social media, with some fans excited about the return of the all-black look and others expressing disappointment with the BFBS (black, for black's sake) trend in college football. While some fans appreciate the nod to the team's past and the opportunity for a memorable "Fright Night" atmosphere, others believe the uniforms lack originality and are simply a trend that's overplayed.

The Verdict: Do They Pass the Test?

The Fresno State all-black uniform is a solid effort. It's a clear departure from their traditional red and blue color scheme, and it's a bold statement for a team looking to make a splash. Whether it's a success or not will depend on the players' performance and how the fans react to the new look. Ultimately, it's a unique and memorable addition to the Bulldogs' uniform arsenal and a fitting tribute to their past. It's a chance for the team to make history and leave their mark on the field.
