Haven's Hafan y Mor: Is This The Best Family Holiday In The UK?

Haven's largest campsite, spanning a whopping 500 acres, is in one of the UK's most serene and picturesque regions. My family and I spent four nights there and it was a huge hit, particularly with our children.

Located just outside Pwllhelli on the breathtaking Llyn peninsula in north-west Wales, the Hafan y Mor site was formerly a Butlin's. There are still some remnants of the redcoat era visible: the platform from the land train remains, as do some of the old apartment blocks, though the cable car has long since disappeared, as first reported on WalesOnline.

But now it's an expansive yet modern site, packed with hundreds of caravans and a vast array of food options and activities. We arrived for our holiday just as check-in commenced and the line of cars arriving to begin their breaks extended out onto the main road. However, the actual process turned out to be one of the smoothest I've ever experienced at similar venues: no lengthy checks of details or key handovers because all that information is provided via the app before you arrive.

Once your car registration has been checked, you're given your directions and off you go. Your keys are ready and waiting on the counter in your caravan, with a security seal (and your name) on the outer door to ensure you're in the right place.

We found ourselves residing in The Stables, a gold-level caravan situated on the quieter side of the site. Despite its peaceful location, it was only a five-minute stroll to the Dragon Lakes adventure village and roughly 10-12 minutes from the main facilities including restaurants, showbars and pool.

The caravan itself, being the top grade on the site, was brand new and genuinely luxurious. The living area was much larger than those I've experienced at similar sites, boasting two actual sofas (not the modular ones that are notoriously uncomfortable), TVs, two bedrooms, ample storage and additional perks such as USB plug sockets and a hairdryer. The main bedroom also came with an en-suite.

Prior to our arrival, the app proved useful for booking activities, viewing the entertainment schedule and even providing a handy packing list. However, wifi is not widely available on the site and my phone provider's coverage was lacking, causing us to struggle with accessing necessary information unless we were in one of the main areas.

During your stay, the app can be used to book activities, order food to your table in the bars, or even have meals delivered to your caravan. The site offers a plethora of food options. While none are likely to win any gourmet awards, the convenience of not having to prepare three meals a day was a welcome treat.

On-site chain venues include Papa Johns, Slim Chickens, Burger King and Millie's Cookies, alongside Haven's own offerings such as The Pizza Deck, the HMS Glendower pub and the Coast House bar and restaurant. For sunny days, there's the Box Bar, and The Cakery serves Costa coffee and cake right next to the playground.

We enjoyed two evening meals at the Coast House. One provided excellent pub grub, while the other left us contemplating other dining options.

However, the venue offers a deal where children eat for £1 when adults purchase a full-priced meal. This can be combined with a two-for-£18 meal deal, allowing four people to dine for just £20.

A full breakfast for four (two adults and two children), complete with Costa coffees, cost less than £30.

Surprisingly, the on-site shops were reasonably priced, stocking Co-op items. Even typically marked-up products like nappies were sensibly priced.

There's no shortage of activities here: trampolining, climbing wall, pedalos, Nerf battle zones, sports pitches, a huge leap of faith jump. Our favourites were the 4x4 off-roader experience and the pic 'n' paint pottery.

You can hire karts or Segways for getting around, and there's a soft play area and two large arcade areas for those who enjoy 2p machines or grabber toys.

The pool was a blessing. With five different pools, including a smaller one for our nearly two year old and slides that our adventurous four year old could use, there was something for everyone.

It's clear that a lot of investment has been made. Haven was purchased by Bourne Leisure Ltd ten years ago and they have spent that time investing.

Overall, it's evident here, the only thing that revealed this was an older site was some of the paintwork in the pool area, but I'm just being nitpicky.

Being in Wales, even in August, the weather was unpredictable. We had beautiful sunshine on our arrival, departure, and middle day, but heavy rain on the other days.

On sunny days, we were off-site, exploring the stunning beauty of Criccieth, Aberdaron, Llanbedrog, Abersoch, Llanystumdwy, and ticking an item off my travel bucket list: the Ty Coch Inn at Porthdinllaen.

The rainy days allowed us to take full advantage of the on-site options. And this is why our children would tell you it was the best holiday ever.

Our four year old spent an hour hunting fossils in an interactive show (£16) before we saw Haven's mascot perform her own show. Then we got to do paint a pot (£12 per person), a swim (free as long as you've got the play pass or £10 otherwise) and then danced at the Tots Disco (free).

We also took seats in the large showbar for the on-site team's panto (free) with fish and chips delivered to our tables for tea (£5.99 for a kids meal, including a Fruit Shoot).

We've previously visited Eurocamp and French equivalents, as well as Bluestone in Pembrokeshire, but The entertainment here was much more suited to our kids. In France, things only really hot up much later at night, which rules our younger kids out.

The tots disco here started at 5pm and lasted half an hour - perfect for little people.

In terms of entertainment, Haven won hands down. For us adults, it was a brilliantly located base in a part of the world we're often priced out of exploring.

We not only went off to explore Llyn itself, but both my husband and I ticked off a few more miles of the Wales Coast Path, which runs alongside the park, on runs.

We never made it to the beaches alongside, but they were utterly deserted and should definitely be signposted more to show people the natural beauty of the area. But for our kids, it was the jam-packed schedule they were able to enjoy that left them shouting, screaming and smiling from the beginning of the day to the end.

We left tired but delightfully happy with memories we will remember for a long time.
