Horror for British Backpacking Girlfriend as Canadian Boyfriend Plunges from Moving Thai Train to his Death on Notorious ‘Death Island’

24 March, 2024 - 4:54AM

A Backpacker's Nightmare: Canadian Tourist Dies in Tragic Train Fall

Shona Morgan, a 22-year-old British backpacker, embarked on a journey with her Canadian boyfriend, 24-year-old Ryan Joseph Ralph, to celebrate his birthday on Koh Tao island. However, the joyous occasion turned into a nightmare when Ralph tragically fell from an overnight moving train en route to their destination.

A Fateful Move and a Heartbreaking Loss

A couple of hours into their train journey from Bangkok, Ralph stepped out of their carriage to smoke a cigarette. The absence of doors or barriers on many Thai train carriages proved fateful as he is believed to have succumbed to a fatal fall from the moving train and was dragged briefly along the tracks.

Desperate Search and a Devastating Discovery

Morgan raised the alarm an hour later when she realized Ralph's absence and failure to respond to her calls. Her desperate search led her to notify officers at a local police station. The authorities initiated a search operation, scouring the area near the tracks. Sadly, the following morning, Ralph's body was discovered under a newly built platform at the Chet Samian Railway Station in Ratchaburi province.

Investigating the Tragedy

Police authorities believe Ralph lost his footing while the train was still in motion and was struck by a part of the concrete platform before crawling underneath to escape the train's wheels. However, his injuries ultimately led to his demise from blood loss.

Not the First Such Tragedy

Ralph's death highlights the ongoing concerns about the safety of Thailand's aging trains. In 2014, a 19-year-old British backpacker lost his life in a similar fall from a train on the same route. Another British backpacker in 2017 was left in intensive care after falling from a moving train on the same journey. And in 2022, an Irish tourist died after falling from a moving train in another part of Thailand.

A Mournful Farewell

Ralph's remains were taken to the Forensic Institute for examination, and the details of his demise were relayed to the Canadian Embassy to inform his family. The authorities have emphasized that preliminary investigations have not revealed any signs of foul play.

Morgan is left to mourn the loss of her beloved partner, their travels cut short by a preventable tragedy. This incident underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures on Thailand's railway system to prevent future such losses of life.
