More Than Just a Preseason Game
The Texans are playing football again tonight, but it's not a typical preseason game. Houston faces the Chicago Bears, and they're doing so at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The day after tomorrow, the franchise's first great--Andre Johnson--will get enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame itself butts up against the north sideline stands. Behind the south sideline stands is McKinley High School, a longtime powerhouse in football. Texans Wide Receivers Coach/Offensive Passing Game Coordinator Ben McDaniels is a McKinley alum, and played here 30-some years ago. In fact, to get into the stadium, the Texans exited their team buses and walked down a school hallway to get here. Mingled with signs directing them to the stadium, were school lockers and classrooms that will soon be full in the coming weeks when school begins.
The Goodyear Blimp is circling lazily above, and traffic rumbles by on I-77 just east of the stadium.
Tonight we won't likely see many of the Texans who will start in the regular season, but we'll get the first look at them in their re-designed unis. The Liberty White Jersey and the Deep Steel Blue pants are the combo this evening.
Football is back, and we'll surely see Johnson interviewed during a chunk of this game. He'll get to slide his Gold Jacket on for good on Saturday afternoon, and his former Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak will present him to the world before that. It's a celebratory weekend: tonight with the return of game action and Saturday with Johnson joining the greatest to ever suit up as professional football players.
Thank goodness football is back, and Andre Johnson is where he belongs, in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
"I don't know if it's really sunk in yet," Johnson said. "It might not until I walk across that stage in Canton."
Johnson's Path to the Hall
It was a banner evening for the Houston Texans, as Andre Johnson was announced as a 2024 Pro Football Hall of Famer and quarterback C.J. Stroud joined defensive end Will Anderson, Jr. as Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the year for 2023. "I don't know if it's really sunk in yet," Johnson said. "It might not until I walk across that stage in Canton."
Johnson's Hall of Fame journey began with his selection as the third overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. He went on to play 12 seasons with the Texans and establish himself as one of the most dominant receivers in the league. He was a seven-time Pro Bowler, a four-time All-Pro, and a member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 2000s. He finished his career ranked 11th all-time in receiving yards and was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Johnson’s induction is a testament to his incredible talent and dedication to the game.
Andre Johnson's Legacy
Andre Johnson is a legendary figure in Houston Texans history. He is the franchise’s all-time leading receiver in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He is also the only player in NFL history to have 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first six seasons. Johnson's impact on the Texans is undeniable, and his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a well-deserved honor. He is an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere, and his legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.

The 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game is a great way to kick off the NFL season. With the induction of Andre Johnson and the first glimpse of the Houston Texans in their new uniforms, this game is a must-watch for any football fan. So be sure to tune in on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. ET!
