Drivers in and around Montreal should be aware that construction projects and the Montreal Marathon will result in multiple road closures. Notably, the Ile-aux-Tourtes Bridge will be closed, again. Planning trips via the Waze app is advised before setting out.
As a result, the following are default closures from 11 p.m. on Friday:
Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge Closure
The Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge, connecting Senneville to Vaudreuil-Dorion along Highway 40, will be completely closed to traffic during the weekend of September 20. According to the Quebec Transport Ministry (MTQ), the closure is required in order to implement a new lane configuration for Highway 40, which will allow the reconstruction of the slabs and the continuation of work on the drainage system. Maintenance work will also be carried out on the bridge, including the installation of a membrane, asphalting and the repair of slabs. The tolls on Highway 30 will be suspended in both directions during this closure. When it reopens Monday, lanes on the bridge and its approaches will be deviated, and the westbound highway entrance near the Pine St. overpass will be closed for the next year. The number of lanes open on the bridge will be unchanged — one in each direction, and a third changing direction for weekday rush hours.
Traffic Management Details
The highway will be closed eastbound at St-Charles Ave. and westbound at Anciens-Combattants Blvd., though access to Senneville Rd. will be maintained for westbound traffic. The ramp toward Highway 40 east at the interchange with Highway 30 will be closed to redirect traffic to Highway 20.
Additionally, due to the new lane configuration for Highway 40, the Rue des Pins entrance leading to Highway 40 westbound will be closed for approximately one year, starting September 23. Road users will be asked to use the next entrance, on Boulevard des Anciens-Combattants.
Other Montreal Road Closures
In Beauharnois, the Melocheville tunnel under the Beauharnois Canal will have the westbound side closed Saturday and eastbound side closed Sunday, both from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with traffic sharing the other side. The upstream span of the Honoré-Mercier Bridge will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday for work on the bridge’s structure. One lane will remain open in each direction on the other span. The entrance from Airlie St. will be closed during this time. In case of poor weather, the closure will be delayed 24 hours.
Montreal Marathon
The annual Montreal marathon takes place this weekend, with shorter races around Maisonneuve Park on Saturday and the marathon and half-marathon on city streets on Sunday. The marathon and half-marathon begin on Île Ste-Hélène and go along streets including Pierre-Dupuy Ave., McGill St., Notre-Dame St., Parc-La Fontaine St., St-Joseph Blvd., St-Laurent Blvd., Gouin Blvd., Rosemont Blvd. and Viau Blvd. before ending at Maisonneuve Park.

A New Bridge for the Future
The anticipation for the new Île-aux-Tourtes bridge continues to grow as traffic related challenges continue to affect residents of the off-island communities. The first of two structures, namely the westbound structure, is expected to be competed by the end of 2026, according to the Quebec Transport Ministry (MTQ). “At this moment, the building of the first of the two structures to transfer the circulation is expected in two years,” MTQ spokesperson Sarah Bensadoun told The Suburban.
Once opened to traffic, the westbound bridge will have five lanes open to vehicle traffic temporarily until the second structure is completed. Upon its expected completion in 2027, the second structure — which will service eastbound traffic — will have three lanes open to vehicle traffic, as will the first. Meanwhile the old bridge is slated to be decommissioned toward the end of 2026.The two structures will have three vehicle traffic lanes as well as a cyclist lane, pedestrian lane and emergency lane, totalling six lanes per bridge, in either direction.
