A piece of film history found a new home last week, when Harrison Ford’s iconic fedora from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” sold at auction for $630,000.
The fedora remained in Ferrandini’s personal collection until the stuntman’s death last September. This auction marked the first time that the costume piece was available for private purchase, according to Propstore.
The History of the Fedora
The hat wasn't worn by Indy in the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, but was made specifically for Temple of Doom. It featured in early scenes such as when Indy, Willie Scott, and Short Round jumped from a crashing plane.
The fedora was created by the Herbert Johnson Hat Company in London and perched on Jones' head as he raced from London to Sri Lanka to the United States where the movie was shot. The sweatband is stamped with the initials "I J" in gold, a feature applied specifically to the hats made for the three original installments of the Indiana Jones saga, the auction house said.
The Importance of Details
Not to be confused with any other brown felt fedora, and evidence of the attention to detail literally stitched into the film, the inside lining of the hat features the gold monogrammed initials IJ.
Made of sable-colored rabbit felt the fedora featured a dark brown ribbon and a leather sweatband and incorporated a more tapered crown than the prior film.
Other Movie Memorabilia Sold at Auction
Other items sold at the auction include one of Daniel Radcliffe’s wands from “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” a suit worn by Daniel Craig in “Skyfall,” and a helmet used in “Return of the Jedi.”
The auction sold plenty of other film memorabilia alongside the Indiana Jones prop, including a Scout Trooper helmet from Star Wars: Episode 6 - Return of the Jedi for $315,000, a wand used by Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for $53,550, and a suit worn by Daniel Craig in Skyfall for $35,000.
The Legacy of Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones is still going strong in 2024 despite the original trilogy having been released in the 1980s. A fifth film called Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was released in 2023, while a major video game adaptation called Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is launching soon too.
