The death of former England cricket star Steve James' daughter is set to be investigated over concerns about hospital delays in the days before she died from suspected sepsis.

Bethan James, 21, tragically died on February 9 2020 - a day after she was taken ill

She lived in Cardiff and was studying at university at the time. The 21-year-old had undergone a bowel operation at a young age and was diagnosed with Crohn's disease the year before her death.

An inquest heard that the investigation will look into possible delays in her medical care - including her transfer by ambulance to hospital as well as her admission to hospital itself.

Mr James, who is a former Glamorgan and England batsman, has spoken of his heartbreak at losing Bethan and being unable to get home before she passed away.

The cricketer turned rugby writer was away covering the Wales versus Ireland Six Nations match when Bethan became unwell.

Mr James previously said: 'When I left, I didn't actually go up and see Bethan, I shouted to her and said 'goodbye' from downstairs. The next time I see her she's lying dead in a hospital. That's something that's going to stay with me for the rest of my life.

'I'm driving back along the M4 and then eventually I get a call from Jane saying Bethan's gone and a nurse comes on to tell me to pull over because I'm obviously in no state [to drive].'

'So, I pull over, I'm sick on the side of the road and I wish I'd been here.'

Following her death, Mr James tweeted: 'We have the most indescribably devastating news that our beautiful daughter Bethan suddenly passed away on Saturday evening. Our hearts are broken. She was the most wonderfully caring and kind daughter and sister to Rhys.'

Investigating the Circumstances Surrounding Bethan's Death

An inquest will look into how Bethan came about her death. This will include her medical history, her care and treatment under Cardiff and Vale University Health Board between January 27 and February 9, 2020, and her transfer from home to hospital on February 8.

Potential Delays in Hospital Admission

The inquest will also cover potential delays surrounding her admission - firstly in her transfer to hospital via ambulance and secondly in her admission into hospital. At the pre-inquest review the coroner discussed the required evidence and witnesses with representatives of Bethan's family, CAVUHB and the Welsh Ambulance Services University NHS Trust.

A Tragic Loss and a Call for Action

The coroner, Patricia Morgan, has stated that the full inquest will examine all aspects of Bethan's medical care, including her medical history and the treatment she received from the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in the two weeks leading up to her death. No date has been set for the full inquest to take place.

Bethan James' story is a tragic reminder of the devastating impact of sepsis. Her death has prompted calls for greater awareness of the condition and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. It is crucial that medical professionals are equipped to recognize and respond to sepsis promptly, and that patients are empowered to advocate for their health and seek immediate care if they suspect they may be experiencing symptoms.

Bethan's story is a reminder that even young and otherwise healthy individuals can be vulnerable to serious illness. It is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of seeking medical attention when necessary. Her family's grief underscores the devastating impact of a life cut short.

Bethan's story, however, is also a story of hope. In her life, she showed remarkable resilience and courage in battling Crohn's disease, vowing to raise awareness and support others facing similar challenges. Despite the challenges she faced, Bethan lived life to the fullest, and her memory will serve as a reminder to cherish every moment and to advocate for health and well-being, particularly in the face of serious illness.

A Daughter's Legacy: Fighting for Crohn's Awareness

Bethan's life was marked by resilience, strength, and a commitment to raising awareness about Crohn's disease. Diagnosed in 2019, she was determined to live her life to the fullest, and her story is a testament to the power of hope and determination. She wanted to help others facing similar challenges and shared her journey on a blog, where she wrote about her experiences and her desire to make a difference. Despite the challenges she faced, Bethan's spirit shone brightly. Her legacy will continue to inspire others to advocate for their health and to fight for a brighter future.
