The New York Jets announced a handful of roster moves ahead of Monday night's game against the Bills. They activated defensive tackle Leki Fotu off of injured reserve and elevated defensive back Jalen Mills and tight end Anthony Firkser from the practice squad. Defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes was released to make room for Fotu on the active roster.
Fotu injured his hamstring and has not played yet in the regular season. He is in his first season with the Jets after spending the last four years with the Cardinals. Mills has not appeared in any games this season and Firkser was elevated for the first game of the year.
The move was just one of several transactions the Jets (2-3) made before the game, including setting their inactives for the contest. Getting Fotu on the field is a significant addition to the defense, which will still be under the coordinator of Jeff Ulbrich, even as he moves into the role of interim head coach.
The 26-year-old Fotu played four seasons for the Arizona Cardinals after he was selected in the fourth round out of Utah, where he was a two-time all-Pac-12 first-team selection. New York signed him to a one-year, $2.5 million deal in the offseason, that could be worth up to $4 million with incentives. But he suffered a hamstring injury during the ramp-up to the season and was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 27. The Jets opened Fotu’s window to prepare for the season two weeks ago and he was a full participant in practice all week.
To make room for Fotu the Jets released defensive tackle Jalyn Holmes. He began the season on the practice squad before he was signed to the active roster when the team placed Jermaine Johnson on injured reserve in Week 3. New York also elevated safety Jalen Mills and tight end Anthony Firkser from the practice squad to the active roster.
The Jets declared cornerback Michael Carter II out for the game on Saturday due to an injury and is inactive for the game. Carter injured his hamstring before last Sunday’s game and Ulbrich said that injury ended up turning into a back injury. Carter did not practice all week and it’s not clear how long he will be out of the lineup.
The rest of the Jets’ inactives included offensive lineman Carter Warren, offensive lineman Max Mitchell, running back Israel Abanikanda, edge rusher Braiden McGregor and cornerback Jarrick Bernard-Converse. That means right tackle Morgan Moses, who has missed the last two games with a knee injury, is available for the game.
The Bills had already declared defensive tackle Ed Oliver (hamstring) out for the game and he is inactive. The rest of the inactives are include running back James Cook (toe), safety Mike Edwards, linebacker Joe Andreessen, linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio and offensive lineman Will Clapp. Cook is missing the first game of his three-year NFL career.
The New York Jets are likely to welcome two run stoppers back into the defensive lineup against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. Defensive tackle Leki Fotu is in line to make his Jets' debut after a hamstring injury has kept the free-agent addition sidelined up until this point. Meanwhile, veteran linebacker CJ Mosley is officially questionable to see his first action since Week 2 on Monday.
Fotu was a full practice participant this past week and does not carry an injury designation heading into the primetime affair. Although his 21-day activation window is open, Fotu technically remains on Injured Reserve meaning the Jets would have to make a roster move prior to the Monday afternoon deadline. He was eligible for activation in Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings, but the team opted to give him more time to ramp up. As for Mosley, who's rehabbing a toe injury, he was a limited participant in all practices this past week.
While the Jets have the No. 2 overall defense in the NFL, but they are ranked 14th against the run. New York (2-3) will host the Bills (3-2) on October 14 at 8:15 pm ET in East Rutherford.
Firkser was elevated to the Jets' active roster Monday. Firkser's elevation Monday could be an indication that Tyler Conklin (hip) will be inactive in Week 6, but it adds depth to the Jets' tight end room regardless. Expect Firkser to see limited work with the Jets' offense and primarily play on special teams in Monday night's matchup against the Bills.
New York Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich provided his first injury report in his new role on Thursday and said that at least one lineman is on track to play Monday night against the Buffalo Bills. Offensive lineman Morgan Moses has missed the last two weeks with his injured knee. The expectation was that he would miss two games and be ready to go against the Bills (3-2). Ulbrich is encouraged that Moses will be ready to start for the Jets (2-3) at right tackle against Buffalo.
“(Morgan is) on track to play,” Ulbrich said. “(He’s) fired up. He brings so much juice, energy, culture beyond just the player that he is.” Moses was a limited participant in Thursday’s workout. He was a limited participant in one of the Jets’ three organized workouts last week.
The other is defensive lineman Leki Fotu, who started the season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. While Ulbrich was a bit more guarded about Fotu’s status, the lineman was a full participant in Thursday’s workout. “We’re very hopeful he’ll get his first opportunity to play for us this Monday night,” Ulbrich said.
Two players did not participate at all on Thursday but only one is injured. Cornerback Michael Carter II missed all but one play of Sunday’s game with what at the time the Jets called a back injury. Ulbrich said that the hamstring “ultimately became a back” injury and Carter is being further evaluated.
The other player who missed Thursday’s workout was offensive tackle Tyron Smith, who received his usual veteran’s day off. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a limited participant with an ankle injury. Ulbrich also said that Rodgers had a bit of a hamstring issue, too, but there were “no thoughts of any time he’ll miss on Monday night.”
Other limited participants on Thursday were tight end Tyler Conklin (hip) and linebacker C.J. Mosley (toe). Ulbrich said New York was planning to increase the intensity of Mosley’s work on Thursday to assess his progress from an injury that has kept him sideline for three weeks.
The Bills had three players who did not practice on Thursday due to injury — running back James Cook (toe), defensive tackle Ed Oliver (hamstring) and wide receiver Khalil Shakir (ankle). Buffalo had a long injury report to start the week. Limited participants included wide receiver Mack Hollins (shoulder), nose tackle Austin Johnson (oblique), cornerback Taron Johnson (forearm) and wide receiver Curtis Samuel (toe).
Full participants included quarterback Josh Allen (left hand/ankle), linebacker Terrel Bernard (pectoral), running back Darrynton Evans (hamstring), long snapper Reid Ferguson (elbow), defensive tackle DaQuan Jones (shoulder), tight end Quintin Morris (shoulder), free safety Taylor Rapp (concussion), defensive end Javon Solomon (hip) and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky (knee).
