John Coltrane, a name synonymous with jazz innovation, is being honored once again by WKCR, a New York City radio station, on the 98th anniversary of his birth. The station will dedicate an entire day to celebrating his legacy and contributions to the music world.
Born on September 23, 1926, in Hamlet, North Carolina, Coltrane’s musical journey began in his high school years. He initially played clarinet and alto horn in a community band, but his musical direction shifted after encountering the likes of Lester Young and Johnny Hodges. Their influence led him to the saxophone, and particularly to Charlie Parker, who became a major inspiration for his playing style.
Following his high school graduation, Coltrane relocated with his family to Philadelphia, continuing his musical pursuits. In 1945, he enlisted in the Navy, where he continued playing clarinet and alto saxophone. A recording session in Hawaii with fellow Navy musicians on July 13, 1946, marked his first foray into recorded music.
Upon his return to Philadelphia after his naval service, Coltrane embarked on a new chapter in his musical journey. He transitioned to the tenor saxophone and became known for his relentless practice regimen, a trait that characterized his entire career and led to numerous anecdotes from musicians who witnessed his dedication.
The 1950s saw Coltrane collaborate with some of jazz’s greatest figures, including Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis. His debut as a bandleader came in 1957 with the release of “Coltrane” on the Prestige label, followed by his only Blue Note album, “Blue Train.” As his career unfolded, Coltrane’s musical style evolved constantly, becoming impossible to categorize definitively. His 1965 release, “A Love Supreme,” is widely considered one of the most groundbreaking albums in music history.
