Labour Day 2024: What's Open and Closed in Halifax, Nova Scotia?
Monday is Labour Day in Halifax and is a designated retail closing day in Nova Scotia. The annual holiday celebrates the achievements of workers and has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest.
Many stores will be closed for the holiday but some may be open on reduced hours. Sobeys and Atlantic Superstores will be closed. Some pharmacies will be closed and others may have reduced hours.

What's Open in Halifax on Labour Day

- Halifax Transit buses and ferries (operating on a holiday schedule)
- The Alderney ferry service (running at half-hour frequency)
- Kearney Lake and Penhorn Lake (with lifeguard supervision)
- Chocolate Lake (without lifeguard supervision)
- Splashpads throughout Halifax Regional Municipality
- The Emera Oval (depending on weather, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
- The Halifax Common Outdoor Pool (from 4:15 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)
Parking and Noise Restrictions
On-street parking will be free on Monday. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, such as those designating accessible parking spaces and no-parking and no-stopping zones.
In accordance with Bylaw N-200, Respecting Noise, fireworks are not permitted on Labour Day.
