Leitrim Development Company has announced the launch of a weekend camp for Ukrainian children aged 8-12 who have recently arrived in the county. The camp is a testament to Leitrim's commitment to fostering social inclusion and cultural exchange, particularly for those seeking refuge in Ireland. This initiative aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can receive educational support, foster social inclusion, and maintain connections to their cultural heritage, helping them transition smoothly into their new surroundings.

A Safe Haven for Learning and Connection

The camp offers a range of programs tailored to the specific needs of Ukrainian children, ensuring their educational and emotional well-being. Key features of the camp include:

Educational Support and Cultural Reinforcement

The program will provide educational support in core subjects to help children adapt to the Irish school system. It will also reinforce their knowledge of the Ukrainian language and culture, ensuring a seamless transition into their new environment. This will enable children to maintain their cultural identity while embracing the opportunities offered by their new home.

Fostering Social Inclusion and Community Building

The camp will promote social interaction, creating opportunities for children to make new friends and develop a sense of community within the Leitrim community. By fostering connections with their peers, children will gain a sense of belonging and be able to navigate the complexities of their new environment with greater confidence.

Cultural Exchange and Appreciation

Beyond educational support, the camp will provide a platform for cultural exchange, celebrating the rich traditions of Ukraine while promoting mutual understanding and appreciation within the broader Leitrim community. This will involve participation in language lessons, arts and crafts, and cultural events that celebrate their traditions. Children will be exposed to the vibrant culture of their homeland and learn about the diverse cultural landscape of Ireland.

Supporting Transition and Integration

The camp recognizes that integrating into a new country can be a challenging experience for children, especially those who have experienced displacement. The program provides a platform for children to connect with their cultural heritage, maintain their language, and learn about the Irish culture, fostering a sense of belonging and accelerating their integration into the community.

Building a Brighter Future for Ukrainian Children in Leitrim

The camp is scheduled to take place every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning on the 21st of September 2024, at the Breffni Family Resource Centre in Carrick-on-Shannon. Instruction will be provided by qualified, Garda-vetted facilitators from Ukraine who are experienced in working with children. The camp is funded by Leitrim Development Company’s Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP).

“We believe this community-driven initiative will support these children's educational and emotional needs and foster a cultural exchange, enriching the entire Leitrim community,” said Nataliya Byelyakova, camp Co-ordinator. This statement reflects the commitment of Leitrim Development Company to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the community. The camp is a tangible example of how communities can come together to support those in need, providing opportunities for learning, growth, and cultural exchange.

A Beacon of Hope and Inclusion

The camp is a testament to the power of community collaboration in fostering inclusion and providing support to those who need it most. The initiative highlights the resilience of the Ukrainian community and their ability to adapt and thrive in a new environment. By providing a safe space for learning, connection, and cultural exchange, the camp is a beacon of hope for Ukrainian children, offering them the opportunity to build a brighter future in Leitrim. The initiative also serves as a reminder that communities around the world can work together to create a more welcoming and inclusive world for all.
