Manchester United youngster Harry Amass is reportedly set to make his senior club debut during Thursday’s Europa League clash against Greek side PAOK FC.
Amass has yet to line up for United despite their struggles in the left-back position all season.
The Red Devils have yet to have a recognised left-back in the starting line-up at any point of the campaign so far, amidst injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
Shaw last played for United in February while Malacia missed the entirety of last term with an injury that required multiple surgeries.
In their respective absences, United have used the likes of Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez as make-shift left-backs.
Mazraoui was exceptional on that part of the pitch over the weekend, as United were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Chelsea.
A section of United fans have been clamouring for Amass to be thrust into the first team following his accomplished performances in pre-season.
The 17-year-old was part of the contingent that travelled to the United States for pre-season and he impressed in all three matches vs. Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool.
According to The Daily Mail, Amass’ wait for a debut is finallyy poised to come to an end on Thursday, when Ruud van Nistelrooy’s men host PAOK.
“After having two former youth team players starting – Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford – and five on the bench against Chelsea, it made it 4,276 consecutive first-team games since October 1937 with an academy graduate in the matchday squad.”
“The chatter this week among the youth players is that a debut could well be in store for one of them against PAOK in the Europa League, with sources suggesting to Confidential that 17-year-old Harry Amass has been earmarked for minutes, more likely off the bench, on Thursday night.”
The Mail adds that Amass is “pushing hard in training” to become the latest in a long line of United academy graduates to feature for the first team.
Amass's Rise Through the Ranks
Amass has been a standout performer at United’s youth level and has been steadily progressing his way through the ranks. His left-back ability has been recognized by the academy coaches for a while now, and he has impressed in the UEFA Youth League, which has earned him a call-up to the first team. The 17-year-old is widely considered to have a bright future at Old Trafford.
The Left-Back Crisis
United’s left-back position has been a cause for concern for quite some time now. Shaw and Malacia have both been plagued by injuries, which has left Erik ten Hag with limited options to choose from. The lack of a reliable left-back has been a major factor in United’s struggles this season.
The Search for a Solution
With Shaw and Malacia out injured, United have been forced to use a variety of players in the left-back position. Dalot and Lindelof have both played there on occasion, but neither is a natural left-back. This has made it difficult for United to build a consistent defense and has led to a number of goals conceded. This has been a serious issue for the team, and the fans have been eager for a solution.
A Young Star Emerges
With the injuries and struggles in the left-back position, Amass’s chance has come sooner than expected. The 17-year-old is a naturally gifted left-back and has all the attributes to be a success at the highest level. He is strong defensively, comfortable on the ball and has a good delivery into the box. Amass is a versatile player who can also play as a winger, meaning he has the potential to be a valuable asset for United.
The Future of the Left-Back Position
Amass has all the potential to be United’s long-term left-back. His performances in the youth teams and pre-season have caught the attention of the club’s coaching staff and he is now ready to make the step up to the first team. With Shaw and Malacia both approaching the twilight of their careers, Amass could be the solution to United’s long-term left-back problem. Amass is a promising talent who could have a huge impact at Old Trafford.
The Long-Term Impact
Amass’s potential impact is massive. He can be a key part of the United team for many years to come and could become a fan favourite in no time. This is a big moment for him, and he has a chance to prove his worth. The fans and the coaching staff are excited to see what he can do, and they are hoping he can make a major impact at Old Trafford.
A New Era Begins
The Red Devils have a history of bringing through young players and giving them a chance in the first team. Amass is the next in line, and he is ready to take his opportunity. His debut could be the start of a long and successful career at Old Trafford.
