Manchester United vs Barnsley LIVE!

The Carabao Cup takes centre stage at Old Trafford tonight as Manchester United look to seal their place in the fourth round against third-tier opponents. The constantly under-fire Erik ten Hag picked up a much-needed 3-0 win over newly-promoted Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday to quell some of the latest speculation over his future after back-to-back defeats by Brighton and Liverpool.

The Red Devils will be heavy favourites to progress on Tuesday evening against a Barnsley team who were brushed aside by Stevenage at the weekend, dropping out of the top six in League One. Darrell Clarke’s Tykes - who lost 3-2 to United’s Under-21 side in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy last month - will expect to be in contention for a return to the Championship this term and have already stunned Sheffield United in this competition in recent weeks after ousting Wigan in round one.

These two teams have not met since 2009 and only once so far this century, with United showing eight changes including a full debut for summer signing Manuel Ugarte. You get the sense that cup progress could once again be crucial to Ten Hag’s fortunes this season. Follow Manchester United vs Barnsley live below!

46 mins: Barnsley make a triple change to start the second half.

They take off Roberts, Yoganathan and Jalo and bring on McCarthy, Craig and Humphrys.

Marcus Rashford was involved in all three of Manchester United’s goals.

He opened the scoring with a smart goal, before teeing up Antony to win and convert his penalty.

Then just on the half-time whistle his industrious work saw the ball fall for Alejandro Garnacho to grab a third.

Rashford has been the best player on the pitch tonight.

Antony looked delighted to score his first Manchester United goal of the season.

The Brazilian was challenged to earn his place in the side by boss Erik ten Hag before the game and he has responded well.

He looked bright throughout the first half, with some nice touches and good link-up play.

Manchester United are in cruise control with a 3-0 lead going into half-time of this Carabao Cup third-round tie with Barnsley.

Marcus Rashford got United going with a well-taken finish, before Antony doubled their lead by earning and converting a penalty.

Then in added-time Garnacho added a third, after good play from Rashford.

45 mins +2: Alejandro Garnacho reacts quickest to a loose ball in the Barnsley box, prodding home after good footwork from Marcus Rashford.

Erik ten Hag will be happy with what he has seen from his side so far.

43 mins: Manuel Ugarte was left writhing in agony after a tough clash with Barnsley captain Luca Connell.

The midfielder had blood splattered across his knee and needed some treatment from the physio.

42 mins: Antony is definitely showing more confidence now, turning his man and running at the defence on the right flank.

United haven’t had to do that much to get their 2-0 advantage here, but their class has shown in the key moments.

40 mins: Alejandro Garnacho fluffed his lines in the box when the pass to Christian Eriksen looked simple.

Antony is having some nice touches of the ball tonight, with Marcus Rashford earning United a corner.

MORE ABOUT

Have your say...

'He’s been brilliant, he’s looked sharp. He got them off to a really good start. Good little bit of play, Garnacho out to Rashford and this is what Rashford’s all about, this is what he can do. The finish is absolutely sumblime.

'This is what they do United, fast attacks, direct, they’ve got players that can hurt players one vs one and Rashford just epitomises what they’re all about.'

The referee brings an end to an enjoyable first half for the home side.

And that should be that.

It's Rashford at the heart of it again, the Englishman showing more good footwork on his way into the area from the left.

He's eventually challenged but the ball falls for Garnacho, who makes no mistake from close range.

Two minutes of added time.

Some worrying moments for United fans as Ugarte stays down after a challenge.

The Uruguyuan is OK after recieving some treatment and will continue.

Another big opening for United as Garnacho gets into space on the left but he can't beat the first man with his ball into the box.

His frustration is clear to see.

There are some boos from the Old Trafford faithful as the much criticised Brazilian steps up to take the spot-kick.

It doesn't faze him at all, however, as he disptaches it into the bottomright despite the keeper diving the right way.

Big chance for United to make it two!

It's more good play from Rashford, who slides a ball through into the path of Antony.

Barnsley stopper Slonina comes rushing out but never looks likely to get there first. Antony beats him to it and goes flying over his challenge with the referee quick to point to the spot.

Close!

The flag has gone up anyway but it shouldn't have done.

A nice move sees Dalot played in behind and he cuts it back for Granacho, whose shit is blocked.

Replays show the full-back was onside but there's no VAR today.

Some good play from Ugarte there as he shows the kind of midfield strength united have been lacking by driving through the centre and holding off a couple of challenges before winning a free-kick.

A warm round of applause from his new fans.

Rashford is clearly the biggest threat to Barnsley here. The defence look scared every time he gets the ball in any sort of space.

Barnsley try to work a clever free-kick on the right which does result in an opening for Phillips, who fires over the crossbar.

After waiting 189 days for a goal, Rashford now has two in the space of three days!

It's a lovely one too, the forward picking up the ball on the right after a lovely pass from Alejandro Garnacho and gliding past a challenge from the left-back before a crisp finish into the top left corner with his right.

Devastating.

The game is taking the shape many expected now. 85 per cent possession for the hosts over the past 10 minutes.

That's what a goal can do for you.

The winger jinks through a couple of challenges on the right hand side of the area and sees his strike take a deflection before being parried behind.

Much more like the form of the player we saw a couple of seasons ago.

Nothing to get the Old Trafford crowd off their seats so far. Lacking composure on the ball in these first 10 minutes.

A nevery moment at the back for United as Barnsley win a free-kick down the right channel. The ball is is flicked on at the near post and out of a corner which is easily dealt with.

That should still give them some confidence though...

No signs of the visitors sitting back early on. A bright start and they've seen plenty of the ball so far.

Barnsley get us underway.

The teams are on their way out at Old Trafford.

Barnsley bidding to make it a night they'll never forget.

Erik ten Hag has made the changes for this third-round but it has meant shoe-horning in some of the players.

We’re expecting Casemiro to play alongside Harry Maguire in central defence and the two full debutants, Manuel Ugarte and Toby Collyer, to play in midfield.

Christian Eriksen is likely to push up to No.10 with Alejandro Garnacho taking over on the left flank from Marcus Rashford who switches to centre-forward. United should still have more than enough to see of Barnsley.

Ahed of the game, the United boss said: added: "I think all the leagues are important. In top football, at the end of the day, it is about winning trophies and hitting targets.

'You set some targets in the season but also longer term ones which you want to grow into, therefore you have a strategy and follow the strategy. You develop and progress the team.

'When you win one of the five leagues then you hit some targets and you have done your job well.

'We take it very seriously," he added. "We have to get into the season and to do that you have to work on routines and patterns - it is very important. Many players didn't play together in pre-season, so we have to build those partnerships and we have to build those patterns and routines.

That is the only way it is possible - is in games - because training time is also very limited when we have to cover so many games, every third day. Training is almost a recovery.'

It’s the Argentine’s second goal of the goal.

Eriksen lifts his head up and picks out Garnacho who is in acres of space – and clean through on goal.

He races into the box, and cooly slots the ball beyond Slonina. Job done for United you’d feel.

Things have gotten going again in Manchester.

So far so good for United, the job is almost done.

Goals from Rashford, Antony and Garnacho have given the visitors a mountain to climb in the second half.

The move once again starts with Rashford, who causes chaos inside the Barnsley box.

The ball is eventually deflected into the path of Alejandro Garnacho, who is able to pick out the far corner from six yards out.

It seals a fine half for United, as there are just seconds to go until the break.

We’re into added-time at Old Trafford, with half-time upon us.

United’s £51 million man is fine to continue after being on the wrong end of a nasty challenge.

He is left with a gruesome wound on his knee however, as blood is pouring onto the pitch. Ouch.

The Barnsley goalkeeper was booked for bringing Antony down in the penalty area.

Antony may not have been a popular taker inside Old Trafford, but he makes no mistake from the spot.

The power and precision beats Slonina in goal, who guessed the right way.

United are in a commanding position now.

Antony is brought down by Slonina inside the box, and its a stone-wall penalty.

The Brazilian now steps up to take it…

It’s been a good response from the visitors since they went a goal down.

While Barnsley haven’t created any big chances, they’ve had some promising moments in the final third, and have edged possession over the last 10 minutes or so.

This game is far from over…

We said Rashford had started brightly.

The forward breaks into the away side’s penalty area and twists up a defender, before firing the ball into the roof of Gabriel Slonina’s net.

It’s a fine finish from Rashford, who has two goals in as many games.

The forward looks full of confidence after his goal at the weekend.

His quick feet create some space inside the Barnsley box, but the shot is quickly closed down.

Rashford then has another two shots from the resulting corner – which are also blocked.

We’re underway at Old Trafford.

How will Ugarte fare on his full United debut? We’re about to find out.
