Matt Baker has dropped a major hint that he could be returning to The One Show following Jermaine Jenas' sacking. The former footballer was dismissed by the BBC last month following investigations into his behaviour. Jenas, 41, later admitted to sending unsuitable texts to two colleagues on the show and expressed his regret. Now, it is possible that former host Matt Baker could return full-time to the One Show sofa, reports the Mirror.

Matt co-hosted The One Show with Alex Jones for nine years before stepping down in 2020 and was a fan favourite. He's now indicated that he's "more than happy to have a chat" about a possible return.

Matt Baker's Potential Return to The One Show

Speaking of a potential return, Matt told The Sun: "All of the shows that I've worked on over the years, even like Blue Peter especially, you leave the show but you don't leave the family. I think that's an important thing to remember and look, if they needed me then I'm more than happy to have a chat with them and see how I can be helpful."

"Who knows, who knows at the moment, I've not had any conversations with anybody, but like I say, it's a show that I still absolutely love. I spent nine years of my life dedicated to it and it's a show that's very close to my heart. It's a family and you never leave the family."

Jermaine Jenas' Sacking and the Impact on The One Show

Talk of Matt's potential return follows the sacking of Jermaine Jenas. One Show viewers were shocked when he admitted to "cheating" on his wife, Ellie, with whom he has three children. Jermaine's dad Dennis Jenas said his son was full of contrition after the scandal emerged.

He said: "He's battling to save his marriage. It's hit the family hard at the end of the day. He knows he shouldn't have done what he did and he wants to keep his family together and he knows he has hurt his wife and kids."

"I called JJ as soon as I saw what had happened. He's my little man, my trouper, my main guy. I left the UK a long time ago but I've kept in contact with him, always. He was very upset of course. I tried to give him a boost and the support he needed. He was in a state and needed it at the time."

Despite the scandal, it is rumoured Jermaine could make a comeback to football punditry on TNT Sports. Dad Dennis told the Mirror: "He's hoping he gets his TV career back and I am confident he will. The BBC is a big organisation and has protocols in place to deal with this kind of thing. That has to be respected. Ultimately, if the BBC and JJ come out of this better and stronger then all good."

Matt Baker and Alex Jones' Potential Reunion

Matt Baker has addressed the possibility of returning to The One Show. The presenter was a mainstay on BBC One's chat show for nine years alongside co-host Alex Jones, before leaving in 2020 to focus on other projects. One of his successors, Jermaine Jenas, recently left The One Show when he was sacked by the BBC — which means there's a potential vacancy on the show.

In an interview with Metro, Matt was coy when asked if he'd ever consider reuniting with Alex as a full-time One Show co-presenter.

"You might leave the show, but you never leave the family," he teased.

The presenter went on: "If they needed me for anything, I’m more than happy to have a chat with them and see how I can be helpful."

"I love that show. I spent nine years of my life on it, so it’s very close to my heart, and it always will be."

His former on-screen partner Alex Jones recently said that she's surprised she's stayed on The One Show for the past 14 years but has no plans to leave. "People ask a lot: 'What do you want to do next? Don't you want to do a big entertainment show?' I'm like: 'What do you mean?' I'm really happy," she told Bella magazine.

"All new projects are exciting and a new challenge, but actually it would be really amiss of anybody to overlook the bread and butter," Alex added.

"All the extra bits are really fun and exciting, but actually for me, longevity is key. I want to be there. Being the main breadwinner, I want to be able to provide security for the children."

The Future of The One Show

The revolving lineup of The One Show currently features Alex joined by Roman Kemp and Lauren Laverne as regular hosts. The One Show airs on weekdays at 7pm on BBC One.
