Matt Denny has finally captured global discus silverware, with the big Queenslander bagging Paris bronze behind Jamaican surprise Roge Stona as the Olympic record was twice broken.

The much-loved Australian (69.31 metres) briefly held the gold medal spot after pushing within 4cms of his personal best on his second effort. But world champion and favourite Mykolas Alekna (69.97) answered right back, breaking his father Virgilijus's Olympic record that also secured discus gold in Athens 20 years ago.

Stona came from nowhere though, bettering a 66.16 to move from seventh with a new Olympic mark of 70m that would not be eclipsed in the final round of throws. Denny's breakthrough podium - the first for an Australian in the event - is long overdue.

The 28-year-old from Allora in country Queensland denied bronze in Tokyo by just 5cm and boasting top-six finishes, including a fourth, at the last three world championships.

A Moment of Triumph and Redemption

Denny's bronze medal win is a testament to his perseverance and unwavering determination. He's been on the cusp of greatness for years, consistently placing highly in major competitions but always falling short of a medal. Channeling Home: A Throw of Freedom

Denny's mental game was as crucial to his success as his physical prowess. He credits his hometown of Allora, a small town in rural Queensland, for providing him with the grounding and inspiration he needed to succeed. He visualized himself throwing in his backyard, a place where he felt free and unburdened. This connection to his roots helped him to focus on the task at hand and achieve a performance that was truly special.

The Power of Visualization

In the midst of the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the Olympic Games, Denny found solace in the simple act of visualizing his backyard. This act of mental imagery allowed him to tap into his inner strength and composure, allowing him to perform at his best.
