Bobby McMann and Pontus Holmberg Lead Maple Leafs to 6-3 Win Over Oilers
Bobby McMann had a two-goal, one-assist performance and Pontus Holmberg also scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Edmonton Oilers 6-3 on Saturday night.
The Maple Leafs jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the second period, chasing Oilers starting goalie Stuart Skinner from the net. Zach Hyman, Corey Perry, and Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Maple Leafs' offensive outburst.
McMann Continues to Impress
McMann's two goals extended his point streak to 13 games. He has been a key contributor for the Maple Leafs since being recalled from the AHL in January.
Holmberg Makes His Mark
Holmberg has also been a pleasant surprise for the Maple Leafs this season. The Swedish forward has scored four goals in his last three games and has shown a knack for finding the back of the net in big moments.
Matthews Nears 60-Goal Mark
Auston Matthews scored into an empty net to give the Maple Leafs a 6-3 lead. It was his 58th goal of the season, putting him just two goals away from reaching the 60-goal mark for the second consecutive year.
Samsonov Departs with Injury
Maple Leafs goalie Ilya Samsonov left the game with an injury late in the third period. Martin Jones replaced Samsonov and made five saves to help secure the victory.
Oilers' Comeback Falls Short
Despite scoring three goals in the third period, the Oilers were unable to complete the comeback. It was a disappointing result for the Oilers, who had won nine of their previous 12 games.
Up Next
The Maple Leafs will travel to Carolina to face the Hurricanes on Sunday night. The Oilers will also be on the road Sunday night, as they visit the Ottawa Senators.
