MacLaren's Feral Cat Conundrum
The MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon, has encountered a persistent issue with a growing feral cat population. Since 2016, these felines have roamed the property freely, occasionally disrupting meetings and causing concern among staff.
Bri's Initiative Takes Off
Bri McDonald, a Maintenance Specialist at the facility, noticed the increasing cat presence and took matters into her own hands. She meticulously charted the cats' hiding spots and devised a plan to humanely trap and sterilize them.
Spaying and Neutering: A Collaborative Effort
McDonald's efforts gained traction, and she trapped 15 cats in the initial round, getting them spayed and neutered. Subsequent trapping sessions continued, and local non-profit organizations, such as the Oregon Humane Society and Meow Village, stepped in to assist with the kittens and medically fragile cats.
Project Pooch Joins the Cause
Project Pooch, a non-profit that connects inmates with dogs, also contributed to the initiative. They provided a drop-off zone for the kittens discovered on campus and have facilitated the adoption of many cats and kittens to various rescue organizations.
A Humane Solution for a Healthy Colony
The staff at MacLaren aims to establish a healthy feral cat colony on the premises, where the cats can thrive in a safe environment. They hope to engage the youth in the program in the future, fostering a sense of responsibility and empathy towards animals.
Join the Effort
If you're interested in adopting one of the kittens from the MacLaren Facility, they are available through the Meow Village organization. They also welcome donations and applications for cat foster homes.
