They've been friends for years
They play lovers on screen, but is there anything romantic going on between icons and cast of Only Murders in the Building Meryl Streep and Martin Short?
Following last night's (22nd August) premiere for the fourth season of the Hulu series, in which Martin Short plays series lead Oliver Putnam and Meryl Streep plays character Loretta Durkin, fans have been speculating the two could be dating after they were spotted holdings on both the red carpet and while leaving the after party together.
Photographers caught the pair hand in hand while joined by co-star Steve Martin, leading fans to question if something was going on. So are the pair dating? Here's what you need to know.
The short answer, is no, nothing is happening romantically between these two.
Back in January earlier this year Meryl and Martin were seated next to each other at the Golden Globes and speculation began to arise they could be dating.
He told the host, “We’re not a couple, we are just very close friends,” after Bill referred to the pair as a “power couple”.
The pair have been friends for years, and it was Meryl who actually called Martin to ask for her role in Only Murders in the Building, Martin explained in an interview with People.
“The story with Meryl is she phoned me and said, ‘I want to be on it,’” he told the publication.“They already planned that I would have a theatrical experience and there would be a love interest. So that was coincidental, but she just wanted to be on the show. She didn’t know about [the love story].”
Meryl was married to sculptor Don Gummer for 40 years before they separated in 2017, however this news was only announced in 2023. Martin was married to his late wife Nancy Dolman, also an actor, for thirty years up until her death following ovarian cancer in 2010.
Martin and Meryl are both set to return for season four of Only Murders in the Building, which releases on 27th August on Disney+.
