Michelin Star Awards 2025: Ireland's Culinary Triumphs and Surprises!
The annual Michelin Guide ceremony, held this year in Glasgow's stunning Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, unfolded with a mix of anticipation and excitement. Speculation had been rife all day concerning the potential winners of the coveted Michelin stars, and the question of whether Ireland would finally achieve that elusive third three-star restaurant remained a central theme. This year’s ceremony, a landmark 125th anniversary celebration for the Michelin Guide, also showcased a commitment to sustainability with the awarding of Green Stars, highlighting the importance of environmental responsibility in fine dining. The ceremony, hosted by Amanda Stretton, began with a captivating bagpipe and organ introduction, setting a unique and atmospheric tone.
The New Stars Shine Bright
While Moor Hall in England took home the prestigious three-star award, Ireland had its own moments of glory. The Morrison Room at Carton House, under the helm of the talented Adam Nevin, secured its first Michelin star. Nevin, a Maynooth native who only recently took up the position at Carton House in September 2023, delivered an exceptional dining experience described by one critic as “sensational,” showcasing a tasting menu that has become the true star of the show. Nevin’s success is all the more remarkable given his relatively young age. The inspectors were particularly impressed with the inventiveness of Adam Nevin’s cooking and the first-rate produce used at the Morrison Room.
Ballyfin Demesne in Laois also celebrated its first star, a testament to Chef Richard Picard-Edwards' culinary skill. Picard-Edwards joined Ballyfin in April 2023, quickly establishing a Michelin-star level of excellence. The eight-course menu (€145) served in the stunning setting of Ballyfin has garnered rave reviews, with Corinna Hardgrave describing the Jerusalem artichoke cream as “downright dazzling.”
Lignum in Loughrea, Co. Galway, under the leadership of Chef Danny Africano, finally received its star after years of anticipation and recognition from critics. Corinna Hardgrave famously predicted Lignum's star status three years ago, expressing surprise it hadn't happened sooner. Africano's focus on wood-fired cooking and seasonal Irish and Italian ingredients has created a truly unique and celebrated culinary experience. The restaurant's 10-course tasting menu (€145), has already established a high standard.
A Sommelier's Triumph
Beyond the stars, Ireland also celebrated a remarkable achievement in the sommelier category. Zsolt Lukács of Daróg Wine Bar in Galway City was awarded the UK & Ireland Sommelier award, showcasing his passion and expertise in wine selection, gravitating towards small artisan producers using organic and biodynamic methods. The inspectors praised Daróg's welcoming atmosphere and the carefully curated wine list, along with the exactingly executed sharing plates that provide “brilliant value for money”. The regularly changing artwork from local artists is on sale and is curated by co-owner Edel.
Ireland's Bib Gourmand Gems
In addition to the Michelin stars, Ireland also welcomed new Bib Gourmands, an award recognizing good food at moderate prices. This year's recipients include mrDeanes in Belfast, a casual dining option opened by Michael Deane. The inspectors highlighted the restaurant’s spacious design, vibrant atmosphere, and well-executed menu featuring dishes from around the world, offering “great value for money”.
A Look at the Bigger Picture
The Michelin Guide is much more than just a star rating. It provides an extensive guide to many restaurants across the UK and Ireland, highlighting not only those with stars, but also those that offer excellent food at more moderate price points. This year alone, 145 new restaurants have been added to the guide’s 3000+ listings, further emphasizing the depth and diversity of the culinary scene. The guide also offers a Green Star award for restaurants that have demonstrated a profound commitment to sustainability. Kai in Galway, for instance, is the sole holder of this award in Ireland.
