A Lifesaving Device Remains Active: Minehead Town Council Takes Over Defibrillator Responsibility
There was a concern that the public access defibrillator located at the Community Building in Minehead Recreation Ground, a crucial device for responding to cardiac arrests, would be removed. This concern stemmed from reports that the South Western Ambulance Service (SWAS) was no longer offering new agreements or equipment for these life-saving devices. The existing agreement for the Minehead Community Building defibrillator between the SWAS and Minehead Town Council was set to expire on September 15.
Council Assumes Responsibility to Ensure Continued Access to Defibrillator
Earlier this month, Minehead Town Council's finance and general purpose committee discussed the two options available: ending the agreement and returning the defibrillator or taking on its responsibility. The council was informed that the defibrillator batteries, which last up to four years, cost around £400 to replace, while pads, lasting up to two years, cost between £100 and £200 and must be replaced after each use.
Local Support and Community Action: The Minehead Community Defib Group
In light of these costs, a council spokesman stated: "Councillors discussed that there is a local defib group in the town and felt that it would be useful for the council to enquire if they could offer any operational support or advice for the maintenance of the unit." Fortunately, the Minehead Community Defib Group has been actively involved in providing access to public defibrillators for several years. The group, which attained charity status four years ago, has funded 20 public access defibs in Minehead and Alcombe, and has trained hundreds of individuals in basic life support.
A Collaborative Effort: Local Group and Council Work Together
The council's decision to take on responsibility for the defibrillator at the Community Building demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the continued availability of this vital resource for the community. This decision reflects a collaborative spirit between the local council and the dedicated group, the Minehead Community Defib Group. Their combined efforts will continue to equip the community with the necessary tools and knowledge to respond effectively to potential emergencies.
A Community United in Preparedness: The Power of Collaboration
The Minehead Community Defib Group, with its commitment to providing public access defibrillators and training individuals in life-saving skills, exemplifies the proactive spirit of the community. The council's decision to take on responsibility for the Community Building defibrillator is a testament to the importance of collaboration and a shared commitment to safeguarding the well-being of residents.
