Moana has another adventure ahead. Auli'i Cravalho's hero returns in the new trailer for Moana 2, which debuted as part of D23 on Aug. 9 and also shows Dwayne Johnson's Maui back in the picture. Cravalho also sang the new song "We're Back" from the film at the event.

The sequel, a followup to 2016's Moana, is set three years after her first voyage, and Moana is "on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui," per a synopsis.

"Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced."

The cast also features Rachel House (Moana’s Grandma Tala), Temuera Morrison (Moana’s father Chief Tui) and Nicole Scherzinger (Moana’s mother Sina), plus Hualālai Chung, David Fane and Rose Matafeo, Awhimai Fraser, Gerald Ramsey and Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana’s little sister Simea.

Disney announced the sequel to Moana in February, and the first teaser trailer arrived in May. Moana is also set to receive a live-action adaptation, currently scheduled for release in 2026.

Cravalho, 23, recently told PEOPLE what to expect for her character in the animated sequel: "She's growing. She is pushing herself now even further beyond the reef."

In the nearly eight years since the first movie's release, Cravalho said she "felt like I grew right along with" Moana.

"The recording booth is truly my happy place, and [I'm grateful to] come back to this character that I know so well, but also take her on a completely different journey," said the Mean Girls star.

A New Adventure Awaits

The trailer, which premiered at D23, shows Moana leading a new expedition, searching for the lost island of Motufetu, once a bridge connecting the ocean, now hidden by a jealous God of Storms.

Moana is not alone in her quest. She is joined by the legendary demigod Maui, who returns with his signature charm and a few new songs. Fans will also see familiar faces like the Kakamora coconut tribe, who continue to make life difficult for Moana and her crew. However, this time, Moana must face a new threat, a mysterious villain shrouded in purple light and surrounded by bats.

The Heart of 'Moana 2'

While the trailer shows a lot of action and adventure, it also highlights the emotional heart of the story. It explores Moana's journey of self-discovery as she steps into her role as a leader. The trailer also features a heartwarming moment between Moana and her little sister, Simea, showcasing the bond between the two siblings.

The Power of Music

Music has always been an integral part of the Moana universe, and Moana 2 is no exception. The trailer features a new song, "We're Back," sung by Cravalho, which sets the tone for the film's adventure and emotional depth.

The songwriters, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, are known for their work on Broadway musicals like The Devil Wears Prada. This collaboration is sure to bring a new level of musicality and emotion to Moana 2, leaving audiences humming along.

A Look Ahead

With the release of the trailer, anticipation for Moana 2 is growing. The film's vibrant animation, captivating story, and infectious music are sure to draw audiences of all ages. Moana 2 is set to sail into theaters on November 27, 2024, promising an adventure that will resonate with both new and old fans.

Moana's Journey Continues

The release of the Moana 2 trailer has reignited the excitement for the beloved Disney character. While the original Moana was a global sensation, Moana 2 promises to take her journey to new heights, exploring themes of leadership, courage, and the power of family. Fans are eagerly waiting to see what awaits Moana in this new chapter of her story, and the Moana 2 trailer has definitely set the stage for an unforgettable adventure.
