A place in the knockout stage of the Leagues Cup will be at stake when Pumas and Monterrey clash in the final West 1 group fixture on Saturday at Q2 Stadium. Both sides lost their opening game of this tournament to Austin FC, with the Mexico City-based club suffering a 3-2 defeat and Monterrey losing 2-0.

One of the surprise stories at the Leagues Cup thus far has been Monterrey's poor form in front of goal, a team that have yet to find the back of the net. Their defeat against Austin on Tuesday was the first this side had ever suffered in the group phase of this tournament, while they have now lost two successive Leagues Cup affairs dating back to last year, failing to score both times. Seeing this team crash out in the group stage would be a shock, given that they have made it to the semi-finals or further in eight of their last nine CONCACAF Champions Cup appearances, only missing the knockout portion of that competition in 2016-17.

Universitarios will enter this encounter on the verge of going home in the group stage of this tournament for the first time. That defeat versus Austin was their first in the group stage of this tournament within 90 minutes, and it ended their five-match unbeaten run across all competitions. Gustavo Lema's men reacted too late against the Verde and Black, conceding more goals in their opener than they had in the entire 2023 group phase (two). Not since the 2010-11 North American Superliga tournament have Pumas been eliminated from an international club competition in the group phase.

Monterrey possible starting lineup:Andrada; Medina, Guzman, Moreno, Arteaga; Rodriguez, Torres; Cortizo, Canales, Corona; Vazquez

Pumas possible starting lineup:Gonzalez; J. Rivas, Bennevendo, Nathan, Duarte; Huerta, U. Rivas, Caicedo, Ruvalcaba; Avila, Funes Mori

We believe the opening game for Monterrey will serve as a wake-up call for this squad, which is loaded with quality and experience to handle a must-win situation like this.

The 2024 Leagues Cup is approaching the end of the group stage and two teams in the West 1 group take the pitch on Saturday, Aug. 3 for the final contest of their group as Monterrey faces Pumas UNAM at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Federal judge says US Soccer didn’t show it made settlement offer in international games lawsuit

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge wrote the U.S. Soccer Federation failed to show it made a settlement proposal or demand to a promoter who sued over FIFA’s decision to block a country from hosting league matches involving teams from other nations.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Moses in Manhattan issued a two-page order Wednesday resetting a settlement conference for Sept. 24. The conference had been scheduled for Monday but was postponed at the request of Jeffrey L. Kessler, a lawyer for promoter Relevent Sports, because of a scheduling conflict.

In setting the original conference date on May 15, Moses had written each side was required to “convey to each opposing party at least one good-faith settlement demand or offer” ahead of a a July 22 deadline to submit a confidential settlement letter to her.

“Plaintiff’s letter reports that plaintiff sent a written settlement proposal to defendant in May, and that the parties held a discussion in June, but that plaintiff received no response to its proposal,” she wrote. “Defendant’s letter assures the court that defendant is ‘focused’ on a resolution, but conspicuously fails to identify any settlement offer actually made to plaintiff.”

She ordered sides to engage in “at least one good-faith settlement discussion” and “each party convey to the opposing party at least one good-faith settlement demand or offer. Past settlement negotiations may not be relied upon to satisfy this requirement.”

Moses ordered the sides to submit a joint supplemental settlement letter to her by Sept. 20.

Kessler and Lawrence E. Buterman and Christopher S. Yates, lawyers who represent the USSF in the suit, did not respond to emails seeking comment.

Relevent sued in 2019 after FIFA disrupted its plan to host a Spanish league match between Barcelona and Girona at Miami Gardens, Florida, and the USSF refused permission to sanction a league match between two teams from Ecuador.

FIFA was dismissed as a defendant on May 7 after saying it will consider changes to its policy. One week later, FIFA established a working group to recommend potential changes.

Ad Choices Monterrey will square off against Pumas UNAM at Q2 Stadium in the group stage of the Leagues Cup on Saturday. Both teams suffered defeats to Austin FC in their campaign opener and need a win in this match to secure their place in the next round.

Monterrey played for the first time in the Leagues Cup last season and made it to the semifinals. They suffered a 3-0 loss to Philadelphia Union in the third-place playoffs.

Pumas suffered a 3-2 loss to Austin last week. Guillermo Martínez Ayala had scored the second goal of the match in the 72nd minute, thanks to Rubén Duarte's assist but failed to score the equalizing goal in stoppage time. They are playing for the third time in the competition and were eliminated from the round of 32 last season.

Rayados have failed to score in two of their last four games and will look to improve upon that record. They have a strong recent record against Pumas, recording three consecutive wins while keeping two clean sheets.

Auriazules suffered their first loss of the season in their Leagues Cup campaign opener to Austin and will look to bounce back with a win. They have scored at least two goals in four of their five games this term and will look to continue their goalscoring form in this match.

While Rayados have the upper hand in recent games in this fixture, considering the current form of the two teams, UNAM are expected to eke out a narrow win.

Prediction: Monterrey 1-2 Pumas UNAM

Tip 1: Result - Pumas UNAM to win

Tip 2: Goals - Over/Under 2.5 Goals - Over 2.5 goals

Tip 3: At least one goal to be scored in the second half - Yes

The next three players are considered key to Pumas' offensive attack and any of them are likely to score in the match against Monterrey. Mexican forward Cesar Huerta (#12) is the team's creative force, his ability to control the ball and create plays have been of great value to his team. He is the team's leading scorer with 2 goals in 4 Liga MX matches and we could see him score on Saturday. He has accomplished a lot at his young age (23 years old) and is an important piece of the team. Lastly, 33-year-old goalkeeper Julio Gonzalez (#1) is one of the best goalkeepers in Liga MX, his height allows him to be a great saver and he is very important in keeping his team from conceding a goal on Saturday.

Like Monterrey, Pumas is in Group A of the Leagues Cup and is looking for first place in the group. The Mexican team will try to get a victory on the road and should not waste any opportunity to take points since they are in a difficult group. With 0 points in the general table, they are in second place in Group A after losing their first match of the tournament. Their last game was on July 26, 2023, they lost 3 to 2 against Austin FC at the Q2 Stadium and thus got their first defeat in the tournament. They arrive as the favorites to win this match, due to the great team they have and the good moment they are going through.

The next three players are considered key to Monterrey's offensive attack and any of them are likely to score in the match against Pumas. Player Germán Berterame (#9) is a great forward from Argentina at 25 years of age, who is recognized as the team's top scorer and a great leader on the field. His ability to control the ball and create plays have been of great value to his team and in Liga MX he has managed to score 2 goals in 4 games. Midfielder Jesús Corona (#12) is another playmaker on the field that is of utmost importance, his great ball control makes him the team's top assister and in Liga MX he has 2 assists in 4 games played. The Monterrey soccer team is in Group A of the Leagues Cup with Austin FC and Pumas UNAM. Monday will be their second game of the tournament and it will be against a tough team, the Rayados are looking to place themselves at the top of the tournament this season so they must win all the games possible and try to place themselves in the first two places of the group to advance to the next round of the tournament. They are in third place in Group A with 0 points after losing their first game. Their last game was on July 30 and ended in a 2-0 loss against Austin FC at the Q2 Stadium. They come as the least favorites to win this game since they play against one of the best teams in the Mexican league, however they could pull off a surprise and take the victory.

The Q2 Stadium is located in the city of Austin, Texas. It will be the venue for this match, has a capacity of 20,738 spectators and is the home of the Austin FC of the MLS. It was inaugurated on June 16, 2021 and cost 260 million dollars to build.
