NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau and Brother Killed in Suspected DUI Accident

The hockey world mourns the tragic loss of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, who were killed on Thursday night after being struck by a suspected drunk driver while cycling in New Jersey. The 31-year-old NHL star and his 29-year-old brother were riding their bicycles on County Route 551 in Salem County, New Jersey, around 8:30 p.m. ET, when they were hit from behind by a Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to New Jersey State Police.

The Tragedy Strikes

The driver of the Jeep, identified as Sean Higgins, 43, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and faces two counts of death by auto. He remains in custody.

The Gaudreau brothers were in New Jersey for their sister Katie's wedding, which was scheduled to take place Friday. Tragically, the accident occurred just hours before they were to be groomsmen at the wedding.

Remembering Johnny Hockey

Johnny Gaudreau, affectionately nicknamed "Johnny Hockey," played nine seasons for the Calgary Flames before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2022. He was a seven-time NHL All-Star and was known for his electrifying playing style and infectious enthusiasm for the game. In a statement released by the NHL, Commissioner Gary Bettman said, “While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path.”

The Columbus Blue Jackets also released a statement expressing their profound grief and offering condolences to the Gaudreau family. They highlighted Johnny's impact on the organization and the sport, emphasizing the indelible mark he left on everyone who knew him.

Matthew Gaudreau, A Brother and Fellow Hockey Player

Matthew Gaudreau, a professional hockey player in the ECHL, last played for the Worcester Railers in the 2021–22 season. He was a teammate of Johnny's at Boston College, where they both played before turning professional. The brothers were incredibly close, and the loss of Matthew is a devastating blow to the family and the hockey community.
